If you want your rings to last a lifetime, it is a good idea to take good care of them. For me, that means wearing them mostly when I leave the house. I do not wear them when working in the house, showering, or when I sleep. As a result my rings still are in excellent condition.

I''m the same as Diamond Seeker. I don''t wear mine when sleeping, showering, cleaning, changing diapers (HA!) etc. I want my rings to last forever so I take good care of them.

I used to live in NJ and commute into NYC via an hour and a half train ride every day and I did wear my rings. I even napped on the train with them. I used to just cover my hands up with my coat or handbag so that they couldn''t be spotted if did end up taking a snooze.

I work as a nurse so I wear a modest anniversary band to work that I got for a song on ebay then at home or out my regular set, I do not wear it cleaning, dishes or gardening or the pool and when I shower like others have said it is in it''s bath. I always wear it to bed, I figure if I have to get out fast (fire or?) I do not want to be looking for it!

Ditto - please be careful Cinna!! I''d be worried if my 6''2 170lb FI was in places conductors advised him not to be

Can you wear a thin chain and keep your ring under your shirt for your commute? It''s a pain but it''s definitely less visible..

I voted 50/50 because I don''t sleep with it on, shower with it on, or do chores with it on. I also don''t wear it just hanging out around the house (although I will leave it on when I come home from work, etc., and take it off before bed).

No changing diapers? LOL Whyever not? In my case, I just have to accept that at some point I will be changing a diaper whilst wearing my e-ring. At one point I had 3 under 3. I was changing I believe at least 20 diapers per day. I should get some kind of medal. Now I have 4 and only one in diapers, but having babies seems to be some sort of addiction of mine. Hopefully, having a beautiful diamond ring will deter my hormones better than all those diapers did! For the sake of my diamond, I may have to put my diaper changing days behind me... :-)

I wear mine every day at the moment, but that said I have only had it for a week so we''ll see how it goes!

Currently I take it off to shower, but I wear it to work (I''m a kiddie doctor) and to bed. The setting I chose is pretty practical(eg. low cathedral setting to prevent catching, bezel under the girdle to make the 4 prong setting more secure) as I wanted to be able to wear it almost all the time without worrying about it.

We''re heading o/s for several months in a couple of weeks and I am leaving it at home then, going to wear my new Leon Mege tiny French cut channel band (which has arrived at home whilst I''ve been away interstate - the waiting is killing me!!) instead.

I wear my e-ring out socially and at work. Since I have desk job I don''t fear to much harm coming to my ring. Arriving home from work, if not going out again I remove it.

Typically if at home and doing the usual home chores etc I do not have my ring on. I am also the type that does not sleep in my jewelry. Thus, everything including e-ring is removed at bedtime.

Yikes. Cinna, I''m more worried for you during your commute than the darn ring. Conductors telling you not to wait at your stop??? They know the inside scoop about crimes etc.
23.gif
I think I spend too much time watching TruTV & 20/20 and stuff but that random commute crime really scares me. Even more now that I don''t do it all the time myself. Please be cautious! Do you have mace?

ETA: Move!

@ Decodelighted and Yssie. You are sweethearts thinking of my safety! That made me smile as wide as this>

Here''s the story: It might have not helped that I look very lost most of the time being 5''4" and a little over 100 lbs and people mistake me for a teenager. It''s apparently very dangerous for a lone asian woman to wait for anyone there because it''s in the middle of nowhere, nothing or no-one around it not even a payphone or major road if something happens... just the prison. It''s a flag station so the train won''t even stop there unless you directly tell the conductors to, or unless you flag the train down from that stop. So I told the conductors I was getting off there and they made me (yes, like a child they told me if there was someone I could call and let them speak to) call my boyfriend/fiance and told him that they were totally worried that something would happen to me and gave him directions to pick me up somewhere else. It was quite a story to tell because they were so worried they kept coming back to make sure I got off at the right stop and even held my hand as I got off the train in case I didn''t know which way to go after I got off.

I think I might debate doing that only after seeing how many people are saying that their rings are worse for the wear... but I totally agree with:

what if that happens?! I totally would not think to get my ring in an event of an emergency. I would grab my husband and bolt out the door disregarding everything else. My hands would feel so naked... and I would hope I wouldn''t feel naked in other places too

I''m actually changing my mind about wearing it all the time now. Maybe for the first year or so and then slowly phase wearing it all the time out to 50/50 at least.

Outside of the house --> On
Inside the house --> Off

I wear mine pretty much 24/7. I know me and my biggest risk is losing it because I took it off and put it somewhere "safe". (I''ve done that with lots of jewelry in the past, luckily nothing but costume but I a HUGE loser of stuff!)

When I am, say, walking around downtown at night I flip it around to hide the stone in my palm.

The only times I take it off are when I travel out of the US and when I clean it. I''m fairly easy on my hands so it''s not a huge deal. I keep it on to cook and clean- I''d prefer to have to clean it afterwards than to risk absentmindedly taking it off in the kitchen, which I know I could do.

I usually take mine off when I get home from work b/c I don''t like to wear when I am cooking, showering, sleeping, working out...

the above is what Gleam said.

DITTO TO THAT!

p.s. how do you all end up nicely cutting & pasting with those cool boxes?

I plan on wearing mine most of the time, taking it off for the activities most others mentioned (showering, cleaning, cooking, working out). I''d say I''ll keep it on in bed.

The need to take the engagement ring off sometimes is part of why I want a simple gold band for the wedding ring. In my opinion the wedding ring should virtually never come off, so I wouldn''t want something with diamonds that I would have to be more careful of.

I don''t know how to answer this because there is a time and a place for everything IMO. Not to mention - there is no right answer. Normally I wear it all the time except when I want to clean it or when I''m getting my hands in something gross like meatloaf. I sleep and shower in it no problem. I don''t worry that it will get hurt doing the dishes - the more I take it off the more likely it is to get lost.

That said, my ring is 8 time zones away in a safety deposit box because I thought it was grossly inappropriate to wear in the country I''m living in. If I worked or passed through an area of concern that WOULD affect my decision on how often to wear it. It depends on the ring though - a carat or less I wouldn''t worry at all. Under 1.5 still maybe I wouldn''t worry. It would depend on how blingy and over the top it was too. How much attention it grabbed.

I designed my ring to be reversible so that if I cupped the diamond in my hand it still looked like a ring, albeit one that wouldn''t draw attention. I have no idea what size diamond or what type of ring you are getting, but I can assure you there is no "proper" protocol and whatever makes YOU comfortable (and you should consider him as well - he probably worries about you) and then make sure you have good insurance.

I wear mine when I go out, but not around the house.

ditto. I don''t wear my to the gym though either.

ETA: as for why? my ring is 3 sided pave and I don''t want to risk unintentional abuse and added wear an tear around my house or out in about.

I would probably do as you guys do as well if I had a 3 sided pave ring - but that''s why I don''t because I always want to have my eyes available to look at it lol Ugh - I''m having major bling withdrawl

We celebrated 20 years last summer, when I reset my stone. Early on, I wore my rings 24/7, only taking them off for showering and dirty or hard housework. Later, I found it best to take it off at night, because it was hard to get them off in the morning before a shower. Now, I probably wear my set 6/7 days (I have a 3 stone anni I wear sometimes) and don''t wear it at night, for housework, at the gym, in the pool...so I checked 50/50.

Cinna,

I too commute into DC via the MARC!!! I don''t have my ring yet but plan on wearing it outside of the house at all times. I usually take off all of my jewelry as soon as I get home from work and but I won''t leave the house without earrings, a watch and when I have it, my ring. I won''t wear it to do housework or anything that would damage it. It''s really all a matter of being very aware of your surroundings at all times when commuting. I don''t take the metro, but when you ride a commuter train you usually see the same people all of the time but on the metro it''s different. Just be cautious! A ring is meant to be worn!

LR

I put it on in the morning when I have finished getting ready, and I take it off before bed. Otherwise I wear it all the time.

How large is the diamond he is planning to buy you? Tell him you will spin the diamond towards your palm when you are commuting.

I wear my ring practically all the time. I do not wear it while sleeping, showering, or doing heavy duty chores. The minute I wake up it is on my finger, and it''s the last thing I take off at night. I get a lot of joy looking at it, and I will never tire of it. It goes everywhere with me, even when I travel - and we travel a lot. When I travel, I leave it in a bowl on the night stand next to the bed. At home, I have ring holders beside the sinks and on my night stand. I feel it is safer on my hand than anywhere else. I would feel naked if I were to leave the house without my earrings and rings!

I clean my rings every day, usually with some type of jewelry solution and a soft baby toothbrush. I also use my Sharper Image ultrasonic and Jewel Jet quite often. Besides a few scratches on the bottom of my ring, it still looks like new with no hint of platinum patina yet.

My sister is not allowed to wear her wedding ring, and she''s been married nearly twenty-three years (we got married six months apart). It sits in a safe. It''s not like they can''t afford a replacement if something should happen, as they are very, very well off financially.I feel sorry for her...

I hope that you both come to a reasonable decision.

After reading the whole thread I will add that I used to wear it all the time until I saw how terribly scratched up the ring got from the sheets at night, and how gunky and gross it got from the shower.

I usually wear mine whenever I leave the house. The only exception to that is if I am going running or to the gym. Than it stays home.

I usually don''t automatically take it off when I get home, but as soon as I do dishes, or shower, ect, than the ring comes off, and I usually don''t put it back on for the rest of the evening.

I only wear mine once a week, if that, when we go out to dinner or something. Because of my line of work, I can''t wear it, so I wear a cheap $30 titanium band most of the time instead, and wear my nice wedding set when I go out. I also have tried sleeping with my engagement ring on but find it very uncomfortable.

I love this thread.

it is very interesting.

when we were first engaged i never took it off, now i take it off at home constantly.
it''s weird i don''t know why.

thank you for this food for thought. lol

i''m going to go put my ring back on!!!!!!!!!!!

hahah! Thank you for finding it so interesting! I love seeing the different attitudes everyone has about their ring. I was not thinking there would be such a vast array of responses!

Oh and a note to everyone: I'm just so curious rather than worrying about my arguments. No need to worry about my ring, I just want to know about yours!!
3.gif

And of course there's no "proper" way but just phrased it that way to see how everyone felt on the matter and get a general consensus

People are 50/50 about sleeping with it but I'm one of those who always forgets to put on their jewelry in the morning and then get upset that I forgot. Imagine if I forgot my ring instead of my necklace! I'd probably ask the conductor to stop the train so I could go back home!

that is such a shame venice! Sometimes I wonder who these rings are for... some people put them on and never think about them again and they get gunked up and they don''t care - they were expected to have them and they got them and its done. Seems like your sister is in a similar situation where it was expected she get a ring but then isn''t allowed to wear it - why have it at all? Get something smaller you CAN wear. Some people only put them on when they go out and that makes me wonder if it''s just something to flaunt - to show to others more than to enjoy for yourself... like the enjoyment of the thing is primarily from the reactions of others. Then there are others yet who obsessively look at them and clean them and wear them even more when no one else is around... to me that is a true diamond lover :)

First 4 years I had it, I wore it pretty much 24/7 (off while cleaning and showering, but on otherwise). Then I changed the setting and my new one has pave (though not a lot of it) and wore it a lot when I first got it, but after i cracked one melee stone while sleeping, I started wearing it when I went out of the house only. Then we got married and I got my wedding band. That, I never take off (It's pave too, but a different, more secure type of pave, and is only 2mm off my finger so it doesn't get banged about). My engagement ring though... it probably gets worn a couple of times a week. Most of the time it's in my safe. I also forget to put on my other jewelry in the morning, but... it doesn't bother me when I'm not wearing it anymore. Now, if I ever forget my wedding band: PANIC!

I also wish to wear it as much as I can, without damaging it though. I think I might invest in one of those ultrasonic cleaners, they sound safer than windex, etc.

Yeah, wedding band will never come off no matter what... well except when I''m dealing with strong chemicals maybe... depending on what I get! =)

My mom has a yellow gold celtic interwoven band as her e-ring/wedding ring both, with a small oval bezel set sapphire. She can probably count on her hands the number of times she has removed it since she got married 10 years ago. She gardens a *lot*. Consequently when I pried it off her hand to clean it (perhaps for the first time ever!) about six months ago, you can imagine th shape it was in.
23.gif
Very out of round, stone chipped and scratched, and the gold was very dinged up. She didn''t get the stone repaired but I took her to get the band fixed at least.

She was bummed about the stone at first, but after she thought about it, she explained that she''d prefer to wear it all the time and replace the stone sometime down the line if necessary rather than have to baby it. While I''m not quite as extreme as that- I''d definitely remove my ring if I was gardening or something, but I just don''t do anything too heavy with my hands usually- it''s pretty close to my philosophy on it. I''ll take reasonable care with it but I want to be able to enjoy it on my finger almost all the time. Bezels are definitely made for people like my mom and myself

For me Life is too short, so I never take off my rings, tennnis braclet, studs or pendant except to shower. it seems to work for me!
