"Proper" daily wearing of your E-ring?

Hello!

My boyfriend/fiance had an argument about this yesterday. I am going through so much time and effort to get my perfect engagement ring and when I told him that I'm never taking it off, he thought I was joking. I insisted that I was serious, unless I thought I was going to do harm to it such as when cleaning dishes, working out, etc. But he adamantly refused saying that there would be no way that he would be okay with me wearing it 24/7. He doesn't want me to wear it all the time due to the fact I commute to DC and thinks it will make me a more attractive target to theft and other reasons... I told him there was no way I'm taking it off unless I have to, so we will continue the discussion later. But I believe that was his main reasoning.

As pricescopers who have more of a love for diamonds, I'm sure most of us do not take it off but I see many and most women going around with only their wedding bands and leaving their e-ring in a safe. I say that insurance should take away qualms about losing it/theft.

I was wondering when you do or don't take off your engagement ring? When do you take it off? Sleeping? Chores? And if you don't wear it much, why would that be?

And how do you clean your ring? & how often?

I live in the DC area and commute via public transportation downtown for work. I''ve never felt unsafe wearing my rings but I don''t have a particularly large set. Some of my friends do though, and they don''t worry about it either.

but i will wear Mon thru Friday ... where i commute from Brooklyn to Manhattan by subway.

i will not wear when i train for triathlon

i will not wear doing household chores

i will wear to the grocery store and "around town" on the weekends.

if i feel uncomfortable on the subway - i will turn it around so the diamond is on my palm side

Let me add... i will not wear while sleeping....

cleaning? will probably do once a week? not sure yet

I never take off my ring! And nobody could make me stay away from it, not even for a minute! Plus, it is serving a purpose...It informs other people that you are engaged and it reminds you of your beloved one every time you look at your hand! It should always stay there! Not to mention that it''s a sin to keep such an important piece of jewelry hidden in the box! Of course, i understand that many ladies wish to take it off when they''re working out or doing things around the house, so as not to damage it. That''s understandable...Do as you feel, that''s what i think...

Hi Cinna,

I'v heard that nervous commuters will sometimes turn their diamond under their palm when commuting, so it just looks like a plain band. These days almost every engaged/married woman has a diamond, so unless it's a real honker (3ct+) I doubt you'll attract too much attention.

If your setting is super ornate and covered in delicate pave, then you should probably remove it for household chores and working out.

Does he worry about his car getting stolen when it's parked somewhere? At least a diamond ring won't leave your supervision.

Wearing the ring all the time is a Noth American cultural thing. Many Japanese women only wear their diamond rings for special occasions, and I think some other cultures may do this too. Could cultural factors be influencing his opinion?

I don't have an engagement ring yet, but when I do, it will be on during all my waking hours ! (I worry about scratching BF with it in my sleep)

I don't think I would either, I've seen some HUGE rocks on other women riding the Marc Trains as well as the metro subway cars. It's just that I'm often coming and going very early or late when it's dark and not that many people out. And my closest metro station has the highest crime rate for all dc/md/va metro stations and the closest train station I'm near is next door to a prison... I usually get off at another stop further away because the train conductors have actually advised me not to wait for a ride there. While my diamond won't be all too large, he's a worrier since I'm so petite

Just wanted to add that I only take mine off when I shower, do dishes, or when I''m cooking/baking something particularly messy with stuff that could get stuck all up in there! I''ve also noticed that by not wearing it on these occasions, it helps it stay clean and sparkly a lot longer!

I usually leave it in it''s windex bath while I''m in the shower anyway

I am a stay at home mom so I do not wear mine often. I wear it when I go out and that''s about it. I just do too much "hard work" at home to want to wear it all the time. I am a baker and rough on my hands so keeping it clean would be nearly impossible if I wore my stuff 24/7.

I don''t wear it when I vacation because of sentimental reasons though. I am always afraid I would knock a stone loose and then ruin a vacation or something. I do wear them for regular travel visiting family or the like.

I don''t feel unsafe wearing jewelery on a daily basis so that is definitley not in my head when I am out and about. It''s all about being in locations where I could damage the ring itself that bothers me more.

I dont wear mine when cleaning, bathing, exercising and I never ever sleep in it as my jeweller is horrified at the thought of anyone with a claw set ring ever wearing it to sleep (I think in case of damage to ring...or partner??? hee hee)

I should''ve added, I can understand his concern though. I work at Gallery Place/Chinatown which as you probably know, has been experiencing a lot of crime- robberies, some carjackings, etc. I start work at 6.45am so get there when it''s usually dark too, and have in the past thought about paring down jewelry but then I decided against it! I think the biggest factor in safety is just being aware of your surroundings. It''s tempting, but I try not to wear my iPod when I''m commuting, not only in terms of not having it stolen but just being aware of who''s around me, etc.

That thought never crossed my mind! He''s Korean, and came to the States when he was young, around ten years old or so.

I take it off pretty much as soon as I get home from work and only wear it on the weekends when I''m leaving the house. This is a reset for me though - after seeing how beat up my first ring got from wearing it 24/7, I now take better care of it.

She takes it off when cleaning around the house, sleeping, shower and the beach/pool.

As for cleaning, we got one of the harbor freight untrasonic cleaners and it works ok.

ETA: as for why? my ring is 3 sided pave and I don't want to risk unintentional abuse and added wear an tear around my house or out in about.

I wear mine all the time except when sleeping, exercising or cleaning. When I lived in SF and took MUNI to work every day I did turn my ring around to my palm because my stop was in the Tenderloin (not a very savory neighborhood). In the winter I just pulled my gloves over my ring. I''m guessing that about two or three months into your wearing your ring your fiance won''t regularly notice when and where you wear your ring...

Yikes. Cinna, I'm more worried for you during your commute than the darn ring. Conductors telling you not to wait at your stop??? They know the inside scoop about crimes etc.

I think I spend too much time watching TruTV & 20/20 and stuff but that random commute crime really scares me. Even more now that I don't do it all the time myself. Please be cautious! Do you have mace?

I wear mine all the time, including to sleep sometimes, especially when I''m traveling for work because I don''t want to forget and leave it in the hotel.

I take it off when I''m doing something hard with my hands, like cooking or cleaning and I have my hubby help me clean my rings with warm water, liquid soap and a little toothbrush once a week. He does an excellent job and the combination seems to work well!

My e-ring is an 1ct oval sapphire in halo. I have worn it day and night for the last 10 years. I wear it when I shower, when I do dishes...the only time I take it off is for manicures. This has had the unsettling effect of causing me to literally have moments of sheer panic ("where''s my ring!") if for some reason I do take it off and go without it (like when I was doing paper mache with my kids). Also, I feel naked without it. Because I''m getting a new diamond ring, I wanted to start practicing wearing my sapph as a rhr. Man it is so disconcerting/annoying. I can''t stand it more than 5 minutes and I have to switch it back. I really hope this won''t be a problem when I do get my new ring!

I'm not sure why, but I'm really surprised many people do not wear them around the house or take them off unless they're going somewhere. Maybe it's a newlywed syndrome but I imagine that at least for the first few years that I would not part with it even around the house. I usually feel very naked without my everyday jewelry.

I feel so unsettled as well when I'm not wearing a certain jewelry piece!

I work in downtown SF, so not D.C. but certainly a metropolitan area. And I''m a petite Asian. I wear my ring to work every day, take it off as soon as I get home, and usually I leave it home on weekends unless I''m going out to a nice place. If I''m walking through someplace where I feel slightly unsafe I will turn my e-ring into my palm.

Funny enough, I used to only wear my e-ring some of the time during the weekday, but once when we were on vacation our house got broken into, so my DH and I decided that if anyone decided to break into our house while we were at work my e-ring was safer with me.

I used to wear mine 24/7 but then I had a baby and scratched his cheek with it in the night, so I stopped wearing it at night. Three kids later, I don''t like to sleep with it on at all. I don''t wear it in the shower, I usually take it off when I''m cooking (ever mix a meatloaf with a diamond ring on? Not pretty) and when I''m cleaning. I suppose if I had a nanny, a maid and a cook I''d wear it all the time...but I don''t, so I don''t.

I think I just like keeping it "safe". When I''m away from home day to day - my finger is the safest place for it in my mind. When I''m home, the box is the safest place.

Like I said before, I wore my original e-ring a lot more - it had all kinds of dings and the prongs were not pretty after ~2 years!

Once you whack it against something at home doing some random thing - and have the crazy panic of "holy sh__, did I just damage my ring

??!!! You might feel a bit different! I would be more than beside myself if I damaged my ring wearing it on a Saturday morning while I was hanging around in my PJ''s drinking coffee...I''d be upset damaging anywhere anytime - but damaging while I''m at home seems so much more preventable by just not wearing it.
