Prongs...split claw or double split claw???

Which do you prefer double split claw prongs? Or split claw prongs?

This ring has double and single claws and to me, its a KILLER setting!

I love claw prongs - so beautiful and delicate - but they have to be done well, or the stone is not safely secured and the ring ends up looking like $4!T

So this picture is a double split claw prong? And without the split from it's just claw prongs?
I've seen double claw prongs with no split what the heck is that called then?

There is only double prongs aka split prongs, not double split prongs which would equal to 4 prongs for one corner. Depending on the size of the stone and where the vendor begins the split, it might have a large, medium or almost negligible split. Some vendors also make nicer double claws than others.

What's going on with that one prong there? You've got the 8 claws in high carat yellow and 8 normal prongs in white gold (or platinum)...except for that one. There's one yellow gold normal prong on the right hand side. Looks odd.

Likely to be reflection from the yellow diamond, making the white metal prong look yellow.

I suppose the final look would depend somewhat on the size of the stone. I prefer a split claw that appears as two claws rather than the single claw that is split near the the top of the stone and obviously appears as one claw split in two.

Yes I think so. My friend's ring has double claw prongs but no split thru the entire thing. My ring has a split with 2 prongs. What is the name of those two different styles?

My diamond is 1.01. I posted a side view. The prongs in person do not like as big as they do in the picture. However remember that the head detail will be on a plain shank band, not the one in the picture. (or maybe a diamond shank e-ring)

That is a very pretty ring. After looking at my ring with the fleur dy lys and how it's attached, I am not even sure if I could have just a 4 prong if I wanted?

I'm not as learned as the folks on here. I am in the process of buying one that is 2cts and one vendor really tried to push me to find a way to protect the stone a bit better after I showed him a Tacori setting. I don't think the issue will arise for a 1.01 but you should always ask because I'm learning that looks aren't everything, quality/durability are things you should consider as well. Anyway, that's just me, a beginner talking

I don't think they technically have two different names... it's just different ways of doing it. But I suppose you could say one is "double claw prongs" and the other is a "split claw prong".

I think if you want double claw prongs then something like phoenix's leon ring is the way to go. Otherwise, if you want a split claw prong, I really like how the double prong is only apparent from the top in this ring:

I guess we'll see over time if it holds up. Hopefully it is thick enough to be very strong! I do know of a couple of people here who had very thin solitaires made by LM which did have structural problems. I hope that is not the case with this ring, of course!

I think whether you need cathedral sides depends a lot on the particular setting you are considering.

Phoenix's ring is 5 carats! There are plenty of settings that have a head without cathedral sides. It is not an issue for the size diamond you are setting.
