Prongs - How do you request the shape of the tips?

Hi Everyone,
I am looking at various 6-prong mountings for earrings and have a question on how one chooses the shape of the tips of the prongs?

For example, in the Tiffany 6-prong ring mounting, the tips of the prongs are rounded and blunt... see link below:
https://www.tiffany.com/engagement/...ment&search_params=param+0/0/0/0/0/0/GRP10001

In the Ritani example, the prongs are more pointy:

And for other mountings, I have seen prongs that look like pointy talons.

My preferred look is the Tiffany prongs which are rounded and blunt (hard to describe but the photos in the above link demonstrate what I am talking about). Also, some prongs look like they are precision-angled and bent at an exact point to hug the stone in a perfect notch while others look like they were just bent by hand to "make it work" (for lack of a better term).

When selecting a mounting, does the mounting dictate the shape of the prong? Or are you able to ask the setter to create the final shape of the prong?

Thanks for any insight.

Absolutely, you are entitled to ask and if not done as asked, you are entitled to return the item.

It is always very helpful to the setter if you send photos with the ask. When you send photos along with your ask, there is less room for doubt or confusion.

This is especially true with custom crafted pieces; however, even with stock pieces from casting houses like Stuller, you can request to have the prongs shaped in the final finish of the item. Your setter will be able to tell you in advance if doing so is possible with the prongs that come with the cast setting, and you can decide what to do if the prongs are too short to modify.

As long as you set the parameters of the task at the beginning of the process, it should be easy for it to be done in the way you want it done.

Thanks for the comprehensive answer! I was wondering exactly this - can a cast setting’s prongs be altered.

@Wink Ditto! Thank you for the detailed explanation!
