Hi all,

So my ring is in production right now! He is basing the basket in my custom e-ring on these pictures that I sent to him of KristyDarling''s ring. I am very excited, but I have one concern. When my boyfriend spoke with him tonight, he said that he was going to have to make my prongs larger than the prongs in the picture because of the size of my stone. Well, my stone is between 1.5-2 cts, and the one in the picture is over 3.5 cts. Why would my prongs need to be larger than Kristy''s if mine is so much smaller? I really don''t like large prongs, so I''m concerned. Does anyone have any ideas?? And what if I get it and the prongs are huge? Is there any way to fix it?

Thanks for any advice you can send!

Same Jeweler? I dont see any reason to have thicker prongs, those are fairly thick as it is, I cannot see any reason to make them thicker.

It''s not the same jeweler. My jeweler is a family friend that I''ve known all my life, who just recently found out that I was getting engaged and offered to make it for us. He said that he was concerned about the stone spinning and coming loose so the prongs had to be thicker. The problem is that he is in New York and I am in Atlanta. What do I do if I get it and they''re super thick? Can they be fixed?

I''ve attached another picture where you can see the prongs from the top.

I don''t see why your prongs will need to be thicker if your stone is smaller. Maybe your jeweler is worried about the possibility of it becoming loose, but if the craftsmenship is good then it shouldn''t be a problem. It just sounds weird. I wouldn''t go thicker, and risk not liking it and having to shave it down which can alter the look.

You can have the prongs shaved down if you dont like them. I wouldn''t worry though- I dont think he is going to make them ridiculously big....

Holy smokes, your ring is huge & gorgeous. That setting is to die for! I think it looks perfect but maybe the jeweler thinks thicker prongs would be sturdier or look more balanced? Did you ask him the reason why they need to be thicker?

Well, first of all, I have to give all the credit to KristyDarling - it is the basket of her ring that we are using, and that is her beautiful ring in the picture.

See above - the reason why the jeweler said that they needed to be thicker was that he was concerned that the diamond would spin. It just doesn''t make sense though, since my stone is so much smaller, but since he''s a family friend I feel guilty calling him up and nagging him about something as silly as prongs. As it is, I literally wrote him a Word document with images inserted to make sure that he understood "the vision" before he went into production. In the doc, I specifically wrote that I wanted the tips of the prongs to be as thin as possible so that the stone didn''t end up looking squarish.

Does anyone think there is merit to what my jeweler is saying?

Did you tell him the size of the stone in your "model?"

This is the one that KD based her ring on, it is from Lockes Diamonds. And is a stock setting if you wanted to you could just purchase it from them. It is 2200$ if I recall correctly. Perhaps this photo would help with your jeweler.

Yes, I did tell him the size of the stone in my model when we spoke over the phone, but maybe I should tell him again.

As for the Lockes setting, it''s gorgeous. Actually, my jeweler was saying that if I had six prongs (there seem to be six in the Lockes setting), they could make each prong smaller. With four, he was concerned about spinning. He also didn''t indicate if they had to make them thicker toward the bottom or toward the top - I would think top if he was concerned about spinning.

I will be so sad if the prongs totally mess up the look of the ring...
