Hi all,

I wondered if anyone else has any experience of the problem I am having... I have a new shared prong eternity band in white gold set with 6 pointers, and one of the diamonds has fallen out after just 11 days of wearing it. I have been super careful because it is delicate, and have taken it off to wash my hands, etc. Is this problem a common one? I am now thinking perhaps I should get a different kind of setting.

To make it even more complicated and annoying, I bought it in the USA and I live in London, so am having to Fedex it to the jewellers at great expense and can''t go and talk to them in person. I have called and they were very helpful and apologetic, and will of course repair it for me, but I am worried in case this happens again as too upsetting and impractical to have to keep sending ring 3000 miles to be fixed!

Would love opinions and advice on this. I am so upset, as I have not even been married 2 weeks and have had to take my wedding ring off.

Thanks all,

Jessicat xx

Hmm. I have a shared prong eternity that I have been wearing for 8 years and not a single diamond has fallen out (crossing my fingers that after this post it remains that way, lol!)
But seriously, I do not baby my rings at all, sleep in them, shower in them, etc. You should definitely not have diamonds falling out so soon. Wonder if the prongs were lose, or not made correctly. I would share your concerns with the jeweler immediately, as I agree, you do not want to be shipping your ring overseas all the time.

Thanks so much Metromom. Am going to talk to them and see if they will start from scratch and re-cast the ring for me as it sounds as though the prong must have been faulty in some way - maybe too short, or not folded over enough if that makes sense.

Alternative is to get a bezel set one, which they also have. I have attached a picture of it, do you think it looks nice and will be a good substiute for a shared prong (which I truly love, and will be very upset to have to part with)?

This is beautiful- and I love bezel and they are good and sturdy when done correctly though, but it says invisible set? is it really a bezel?, and I can''t even see the bezel. is there a close up shot?

I think you''re right D&T, and I was mistaking the tiny metal border for a bezel - oops. Plus it turns out they don''t do these settings anymore as guess what, they were too delicate!

Anyway, I have spoken to my jeweller and she really thinks I have had a very unfortunate experience, but that with a recast ring, I should be okay. So my plan is to get it recast on the understanding that if it happens agan I can choose another setting. This seems to be a good solution to me, but I must admit I am spooked by the experience of the lost diamond!

That is great news... Hopefully they pay the shipping fees both way as well? but in any case, I hope it works out better this time around, I''m sure it will!

An invisible set stone is needs more babying than shared prongs. I''ve never had a shared prong stone fall out, so I''m glad your jeweller is going to fix it. I would also explain my concern with the shipping should this happen again.

If the ring hasn''t been subjected to a hard strike of some kind, then I''d guess it might have been a residue issue. Sometimes, metal residue from polishing a piece can become lodged under the prong during setting; this can become dislodged when the ring is cleaned enough to make the stone loose in its seat. It''s typically an easy fix.

Hope your jeweler is able to take care of what you need.

Sorry it has taken me so long to say it, but thanks so much ladies. In the end did not need to ship as my cousin was travelling to NYC and took it for me. It''s now with the jewellers, and when I call them to check progress I will DEFINITELY mention shipping costs issues in case this happens again.

Meantime, I am wearing a silver band on my wedding finger which I bought aged 15 and is all bent out of shape and not even vaguely similar in colour to my ering - it looks awful so can''t wait for my wedding band to come back!!
