Hello,

Let me first take this opportunity to thank you all for the amazing information. This site rules (avoided the rock pun there, phew).

I am interested in an asscher shape, but I heard that an asscher would look smaller than a princess of the same carat weight.

Example:

For a carat weight of 1.0 (and assuming that both shapes have ideal cuts --I know that asscher does not have "ideal" ratings, but let''s pretend that the table and depth are within a good range for this shape), I heard that an asscher can look up to 30% smaller due to the majority of the diamond being in "they body"!

Is that true?

Yes, it is true.

Although 30% seems a lot to me, it is true that asschers look much smaller than their true carat wt., especially when compared to other shapes like rounds. Asschers carry most of their wt in the belly of the stone- so they always look smaller for their size. Princesses look a little truer to their wt., however due to the sharp edges they still do not look as big as say a round of the same carat wt. Just my $.02, of course...

Asschers are also slightly cheaper per ct than well cut princess and rounds so you can get more weight for the same $ which can make a difference.
There is another thread on this ill find it and link it.

Thank you very much. This is great info!
