I am another diamond noobie, I have been doing research for a while, but I haven't been able to find specifics about princess cuts. Should I be looking for the same depth as a round diamond? How about the table and crown percentages? It seems most princess diamonds are over 70% depth, which is way too deep from the numbers I have found on here.

I have about $5k to spend on the loose diamond and would like a dazzling diamond somewhere over a carat. I was thinking G or better and VS1 or better. I found a setting that I really like on sunjewelers.com, but I am not real impressed with thier loose diamond selection.

Thanks for the help!!

princess specs are not similar to Rounds at all and a range in the 70 for depth and table is perfectly normal.

Are there optimal numbers that I should shoot for, or as long as it is an ideal cut, then it should be ok? I can possibly go up to $6k for a diamond, but would rather stay a bit lower.

I found this diamond that seems to fit the bill. The girdle is fairly thick though and that causes leakage, right?

1.11 princess

The polish is excellent, but the symmetry is very good. Will that affect the diamond much?

The Cut Class chart for princess cuts found on www.gemappraisers.com does not define the new AGS0 cuts, but it will help with the majority of regular diamonds in the market. There is no set number that works, but this chart will assist you to pre-screen stones.

Here''s an H VS2 that seems really nice:

Here''s a G VS2 that is at the very upper end of your range:

http://www.exceldiamonds.com/diamond/46169.html

Here''s a G VS1 that is slightly over your price point:

http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/591/

Another G VS2 and an H VS2 both in your price range:

http://www.whiteflash.com/aca_princess/A-Cut-Above-Princess-cut-diamond-174064.htm

http://www.whiteflash.com/aca_princess/A-Cut-Above-Princess-cut-diamond-174072.htm

I am by no means an expert and anyone can correct me if i am wrong but, I''ve just been looking for a princess cut as well and i started out at your price point but had to trim a bit and ended up getting a .991 carat I VS1 for $3800.

All of the above are ASG-0 princess diamonds. THe first 3 have lots of extra reports. You''ll notice that all have tables that are a lot smaller than most tables you''ll see on Blue Nile for example. if you look on exceldiamonds you can see the table/depth percentage for lots of ASG-0 ideal diamonds. They tend to all have smaller tables than typical, though you can be in the low 70s and get a 0 from my understaning. Depths in the low 70s up to about 75% are also pretty normal for the ideals.

Searching for Princesses isn''t like Rounds, where there is a definately tight range on what is considered ideal. It seems like with rounds you can search by the numbers a lot easier. I ended up buying a diamond that had a lot of extra reports because I wanted to make sure that I got a really pretty looking diamond w/ a really spectacular cut. It seemed to me that Good old Gold and ExcelDiamonds had the most info followed by whiteflash and then it rapidly deteriorates. James Allen got me extra info but I had to request it and it wasn''t always right (they sent the wrong Sarin on one diamond), though they were always friendly and helpful. I found that any diamond that fits the 1A or 1B categories at the gemappraisers site seems to be labeled as ideal at james allen. I''m not sure if places like blue nile do something similar to categorize cut for princesses.
