In his Price Scope Journal article "The matter of depth in a princess cut (diamond)" Paul Slegers of Infinity Diamond Cutters addressed the issue of total depth and provided an excellent explanation of why princess cut diamonds can not be judged "by the numbers" in the same manner which we evaluate round brilliant cut diamonds. I hope this helps you with your quest.

haha!
Okay, I see. I am just so nervous about buying, but I guess if I like it, I like it!

Princess and other fancies can not be fully judged by numbers alone.

The numbers do show a couple of things to check on the first diamond, though. Make sure the very thin part of the girdle is not very extensive or near the corners. A very thin girdle can be prone to chipping, especially at the corners. Also, the crown height is a touch low, most really top performing princess have crown heights in the low double digits. A low crown can result in less fire (colored spectral flashes). Since this one is just under 10%, it could be OK, but you might want to make sure to look at it in a variety of lighting environments.

The GIA diamond would need a lot more information to make any informed decisions. If you would like more help on either stone, high quality photos and ASET images would be needed.

Also, you may or may not be aware that EGL grading can be two or more grades off of GIA grading, so the EGL I VS2 may be graded lower in color &/or clarity by GIA or AGS. If you do like the EGL diamond, I would recommend making the purchase contingent on an independent appraisal.

Now I didn''t know about this possibility - and, to be honest, I am VERY rough on my rings.

Nothing to add.
