Several years ago I purchased a 1.03 carat princess cut diamond engagement ring for my girlfriend from ebay. I wound up buying her a 1.10 carat round diamond (the one I eventually gave her) from a local jeweler because I found out she really wanted a round. I kept and still have the princess and recently was looking over the appraisal that came with it. It states that the main diamond is a 1.03 carat G color VS2 clarity. The side diamonds are listed separately as G-H SI2, .25 carats. I am getting more into diamonds and measured the diamond with a JO-DI diamond gauge. It measures 5mm x 5mm x (what looks like) 5mm deep. According to everything I''ve read, that equals .75 carat. Am I missing something? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Typically a 1 caret princess will approximate 5.5 mm x 5.5 mm. In your case you lost a lot of the weight in the pavilion. Your stone is 5mm deep which is very deep.

So then it can still be a full carat? I brought it to a jeweler a while back and he said that it looked "dead" in the center. The extra depth is the problem?

yap, deep, the extra depth is probably the reason. Definitely you do not see a 100% depth polish stone everywhere, it is very rare.

I would assume that your appraiser accurately measured the stone. The length/width of a stone can vary based on the depth of the stone. 5mm is really deep. Based on the info you posted I would assume that it looks dead due to a bad cut. Do you know what the table percentage is?

Rare as in "not good" rare I''m sure. How severely does it affect the value? The appraisal was $10,150.00 in 2002. I know they are usually way optimistic, but just curious how far off.

Thanks in advance for all the help.

Your best bet would be to consult an independant appraiser, they can tell you exactly what you have Tony, below is the-

There is no measurement information. Just the grading.

Do you want a valuation for resale purposes?

I haven''t really thought about selling it, but I may want to in the future. I was more curious than anything. This ring has been sitting in my drawer for a few years and I just recently bought a journey necklace for my (new) girlfriend (the engagement didn''t work out with the other one). I am trying to educate myself for my next go round.
