I've actually seen this setting in person and it is gorgeous. It really reminded me that what we are looking at online and in photographs are MAGNIFIED images. The setting, even with a somewhat larger stone, is very delicate, feminine, beautiful. Great choice!
I haven't seen it in person and am therefore placing my trust in Brian "the cutter". He said the w-prong was originally designed with larger stones in mind and therefore feels it will really show of my stone. So, I just have to wait now...10 business days...maybe longer (my B/F has to propose before I get it--imagine that!)....I'm so impatient!!!
Hey Researcher, I really like the W prong. I wonder if it would look good with a 1 carat. I am still not sure which setting I am going to get. I would like to get a whiteflash setting. I really like the U prong settings but I cannot decide between the Knife edge or the uprong half shank. Man, I am struggling....
I was told the w-prong looks very good with stones .8 ct and higher (they made some modifications from the original because so many people liked the design). In all honesty, I think the w-prong will look better with a 1 ct than 3+ just because the "w" won't be so wide. As for the u-prong, I think those are nice but I personally don't think they show off as much of the stone. I did consider them, but decided that the lines on the w-prong looked better with the lines of the princess cut stones (I like the u-prong with rounds).
As for the height of the stone, you can tell the designer if you want it to be set higher or lower. There's a thread on here somewhere in which Leslie from WF posted a couple of x-prongs with the diamonds set at different heights. IMO it looks best if the culet of the diamond fits exactly into the part of the "x" or "w" that crosses over (when the stones are set high there's some space between the bottom of the setting and the stone so that you can see the entire culet from the side).
One thing that helped my B/F and me decide between the w-prong and x-prong (besides the almost $1000 difference in price for my size stone) was the uniqueness and durability of the w-prong. Not only do the WF rings have 1 gram more of platinum than the Vatche rings, they are casted as one piece. And with all the x-prong knockoffs out their, why not get something a little different? Something to think about....
Notice the space between the culet and the middle of the "x" in the first one, and how there's no space in the second picture. I've heard that diamonds look larger when set higher, but I personally think they look better when set a bit lower
