I keep making the mistake of requesting info on ctw (matched pair) diamonds versus carat (single) diamonds. Is there an easy way to tell the difference in the pricescope search engine?

I don't think you can search by total weight. Are you trying to search for a matched pair by ctw or just trying to find a single stone?

thanks for the quick response. i'm trying to find a single stone and have been searching around pricescope extensively. however on several occassions now i've contacted vendors and gotten the reply "that's ctw for a matched pair".

That's odd. What are you looking for...shape, weight color, clarity?

So I do a search for rounds, .7-.85 carats, D-H color, and VS1-SI2 clarity. Get the typical huge number of hits and sort by price. Apparently many (at least based on 6/7 diamonds I had inquired about) of those lower priced stones are matched pairs.

Not that I'm looking for a cheap diamond, but it's really confusing trying to figure out when the matched pairs stop and the single stones start (and what a competitive price is!).

Yummy, here's a 0.71 H SI1 H&A stone for $2849: http://www.goodoldgold.com/0_71ct_h_si1_h&a.htm
This thing is going to sparkle like mad and look a lot better than a poorly cut D VS1.

A little bigger: http://www.goodoldgold.com/0_83ct_g_si1_h&a.htm

If your budget is smaller than that: http://www.superbcert.com/products/index.cfm?Product_ID=426&Product_Subcategory_ID=2&Product_Category_ID=3&Product_Group_ID=1

I also like www.dirtcheapdiamonds.com 's search engine. It's user-friendly.

As far as why vendors are telling you that certain stones are part of matched sets, I have no idea. Has more than one vendor done so?

If a vendor is really interested in having you as a customer, I would expect he or she might follow that up with an offer of a similar stone if that one is not available due to being part of a set. If not, try to find a vendor who is willing to work with you.

Some more:

brains, beauty, and brawn, oh woops, I mean color, clarity, and cut:

Hasn't been priced yet, but very yummy too: http://www.goodoldgold.com/0_82ct_f_si1__h&a.htm

P.S. As far as I know, the two websites I've posted stones from, www.goodoldgold.com and www.superbcert.com, are the only ones posting brilliancescope (reading the light return or your stone) readings for your general perusal, but many other vendors can provide this information on request.

Though it's probably not outright misrepresentation, it's at least very confusing if not misleading that many pricescope vendors list matched pairs intermixed with single stones.

In fact there are enough matched pairs in the pricescope search engine that I wonder why they don't have a separate section for these, or at least require the vendors to say it's a matched pair or c.t.w.
