Ok.. So I went today to check out having an engagement ring custom made.. I have decided to go with the three sided pave similar to the picture below.. the guy showed me a diamond he had.. it was 1.25k, e color, vvs1.. everything was listed as very good as far as cut, polish, etc.. it was gia rated.. total for the ring was 14k out the door.. and that is for platinum.. now here is the most important question.. do i go with a three stone type ring or solitare.. i like hte idea of three stone because i feel the two smaller stones accent the main stone.. but not sure how it will look as he did not having anything to look at to give an idea.. i just had to visualize it i guess.. anyway.. just curious what you guys think.. below is a picture of what the band will look like.. should i go solitare or three stone?

I guess I'm curious about the cut?

The cheapest GIA E VVS1 over 1.2 cts on the PS search is 13.2K, and it has medium fluoro.

in the post it says the cut is all VG.

I think you might want to look into the stone more first. Why go so high in color or clarity but skimp on the cut? It is the most important part aspect to an attractive stone.

then my next question is if you plan on wearing a wedding band with the e ring. because that pave on all sides is going to scratch up any band sitting next to it.

then the lastly, i this ring for you or your FI. If its for someone else, do you know what she likes, solitaire vs three stone?
My only concern about it being a 3 stone is that itll be a little more busy than a solitaire would be

Yes, I'm wondering just how very good is "VG." Please post GIA report #

it was a princess cut.. i dont have all the paperwork on it.. we left off with pricing it out and a "ill get back to you" since I wasnt very sure on the whole three stone or solitare.. the ring will be for my girlfriend.. she is 100% on the three sided pave.. everytime the talk about a ring comes up that is what she always talks about.. not sure if she will wear a band with it or what but she is 100% on three sided pave.. i asked the jewelers opinion as I have heard the same about them rubbing but he said that while it is possible they can rub as long as the rings fit they wont be rubbing heavily against each other.. but again she may just wear the engagement ring by itself.. worst case she can get a spacer or something.. But as far as the diamond goes the jeweler said it was a top notch diamond.. i looked on BN to get an idea of prices and most 1.25k princess with everything being in the very good area fell in the 8-10k range.. leaving 4k for the setting based on the quote i got..

Well as long as you know the dangers of the three sided and wants it anyway then do it up. I don't know about the three stone. I feel like I'd want to know how she feels about them before getting one. Also I think I like the solitaire better just because a lot of princesses and pave I find less appealing than one nice one..... but I love a three stone too. So either might be nice.

Has she made comments one way or the other?

Oh, princess. NVM, then.

i bought her a ring a long long time ago that she still wears and it is three stone.. she says she likes it and has said in the past that she likes the three stone.. i have just not seen any three sided (rounded) pave that have three stones.. vera wang has a solitare with the rounded three sided pave but not three stone.. trying to find some pics online to see what it would look like.. so far this is the closest I could find..

Three stone:

Ok.. Well just got back for another dealer.. I brought them the picture of the ring above with the three sided pave with three stone and said they could do the ring for 10k... They said it would be custom made and whatnot.. The stone specs would be: Color G - Cut - princess - Clarity VVS1 - Size 1.22 - She gave me the certification number but for some reason its not coming up.. maybe she wrote it wrong.. but anyway.. it had a thick girdle.. no cutlet.. everything was listed as vg.. i think the table was 74% and depth 70% or something like that.. She said the side stones would be .20.. i want to say she said they would be f color and probably si.. i think she also said the pave stones would be f's and si as well.. idk.. trying to think of what to do here.. both jewelers made me feel very comfortable but its just so confusing.. espeicially purchasing without seeing the ring first.. WHAT DO I DO!!!

Hmm well a few things. One, why do you want to get a stone with such high clarity? Is there something about high clarity you like or do you just want it to be e eye clean? Because you can go down to si1 and it still not have visible inclusions. And vs2 almost always is eye clean. So you could go down in clarity and save some money there.

2 sounds like your gf would like a three stone from what you said. But 2ct seems pretty small foe side stones. I would imagine something a bit larger might have more visable. Now I'm not saying 1 CT or something but 20 pointers are small, especially when compared to a 1.25 or so

Well the woman showed me an si.. while she held it up to look at it and i was about a good 1 to 2 feet away and i saw the inclusions.. i know that once the stone is set you wont see as much but i want to be able to look at it and not see anything wrong.. as far as the side stones go.. she told me that 20 pointers would be a good match.. i like the idea of a three stone, but i dont want the center stone competing.. i want the side stones to compliment the center.. so she was saying that either 20 or 25 pointers would be used..

Well not all si1 clarity are equal. Some are eye clean. Some are not. And even if you are uncomfortable with si1, why not vs2?

Different inclusions look different. You could have an si1 with black carbon spots. Or you could have one with twining wisps. Black inclusions will be a lot more noticeable, will wisps may not be at all.

Also, just consider looking at three stones with a few different sides, to make sure you know what proportion you like. You don't want them competing, but you don't want them to be throw says either. You want them to compliment. :))

Take a look at these links. The second one is so you can get side stone perspectives
