Hi,

I have a pretty simple question. Well, I haven''t been able to find the answer anywhere else on the ''net, but I''m hoping you people have are able to help me. I''m wondering how much a 50ct+ stone is worth. H color, VS2. I am unsure about the cut as it has not been cut yet (50ct is the estimated weight of the finished stone) I know these are rare, but would never have guessed it so hard to gather relevant price information of similar stones. Are any of you able to help me?

ps. no I''m not that rich, just trying to help some people out with some info.

I am no expert. I am not really even worthy enough to be friends with the experts at this point... But, a thought did pop into my head.

That thought is that a stone that large would be difficult to truly value in that it is only worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it. Does that make sense? I'm a commercial banker and when taking collateral, I can only assign a value to a "widget" that I know someone will pay. 10 cents on the dollar, for instance. There may be data that suggests it should be worth $XXXXX, but if nobody will pay that, then it is all conjecture. Making any sense?

As far as sources to find out such a value? I would think an appraiser could give you some input, but most I suspect will think you are making this up and wasting thier time (which hopefully you are not doing to them or anyone on this site). Search online (I prefer Google) for "50 carat diamond" or something like that and you may find news stories on other large diamonds that may provide price information on what someone paid for this stone or that stone at acution, etc.

Beyond that... The stone is currently uncut? Knowing zilch about cutting a diamond, is it really possible to determine color and clarity prior to the stone being cut?

Good luck.

It's next to impossible to answer your question because at that level, every stone sells on its own merits, and the selling price depends heavily on how it's sold, the publicity, who gets involved in the process, etc. The reason you haven't been able to gather comparable sale data is because, even though stones that large come on the market with some regularity, the sales themselves are often--and the final purchase price is almost always--confidential.

I know of a 40 ct stone that sold for about $3 million a few years ago, but it belonged to Jackie Onassis, so that surely afftected the price. I doubt your 50 ct stone would reach that level.
