Doing some shopping for an engagement ring and wanted to ask second opinions about the price of the deal I might be getting.

I’m shopping at Benari Jewlers and I’m looking to get a Veraggio two tone engagement ring in 14k white gold with rose gold.

https://www.verragio.com/Verragio-Engagement-Rings/Couture-Engagement-Rings/COUTURE-0426R-TT

This is the setting.

I’m looking to put a yellow sapphire as the center stone.

The setting is priced at 3,850 and the yellow sapphire is priced at 2,275 making the ring initial quote 6,125 before sale tax. Now Apparently there is supposed to be a “Big sale” on the 20th. The jeweler ballparked this would be marked down close to 5,000 out the door.

Does this seem like a good deal? There isn’t a big market price guide for yellow sapphires so I wanted to ask around. I included some good pictures to see what the stone looks like in a very similiar setting. 20150610_151801.jpg20150610_162826_001.jpg20150610_162815.jpg20150610_162518.jpg20150610_162658.jpg20150610_163922.jpg20150610_162704.jpg20150610_152521.jpg

Any setting with a pointy design element on the underneath of the ring, palm-side, seems like a fundamentally dreadful idea. That area is the most abused on a ring:
- The sharp force point will try to crack/rip anything you lift, carry, or grip,
- It'll get dinged every time you pick something up or hold something,
- Grab something heavy enough and it'll turn into a point source of pressure that will do all it can to distribute the load and force the platinum "outer" shank out of round. Platinum is malleable that way, and is more likely to go out of round than crack, but RG is known for being brittle...

Settings are aesthetic choices but I feel compelled nonetheless to urge you to choose a more practical design, especially given what this one costs ;(

You might want to post this in the color stones forum. They know a lot more about sapphires over there!

I agree with Yssie about both the comfort and durability of the design, in particular, the pointy end of the shank. As for the sapphire, there is no mention of treatment. Is it untreated, heated or diffused? All those affect pricing significantly.

You are getting good info in this thread. I would definitely post this over in the CS forum. As Chrono said there is no info on treatments on that sapphire. You could be getting a sapphire that is way overpriced or a decent deal. I would suggest getting more input on the sapphire so you can make an informed decision.

One other consideration about the setting - that particular setting will be extremely difficult to resize, should that be needed... and many women find that they need to adjust the ring size after a pregnancy. If your GF is a sentimental person who might want to keep and wear her original e-ring for many years, a simpler setting might be a good idea.

yikes this is some really good feedback. The stone is heat treated. I will have to ask my girlfriend about the setting concerns.

I don't like the pointy bit on the bottom of this setting either. The sapphire looks cloudy to me as well. I think I would want to buy a certified stone for something like an engagement ring.

It seemed pretty clear to me in person. Could it be the camera? Also what is the certification of a sapphire?

It seems like everyone thinks this setting would be bad in the long run but the girlfriend is in love with it. What to do. :wall: :wall: :wall:

I think the points PS posters have mentioned are valid concerns with that particular setting. That being said, if she's set on it then maybe she can avoid wearing it during activities when it's more likely to be an issue. (I take off my rings almost as soon as I get home each day. I avoid wearing them when cooking, cleaning, gardening and other activities.).

Regarding your other question...yes, the stone could look different in photos. I'm learning that gemstone photography is an interesting topic!

I hope we are allowed to post a CS thread in RT. You may find this one to be helpful regarding treatments & reports.

Have a setting custom made that's similar to that one without that pesky point.

Or this ::)

As for the stone, I think it's overpriced. Based on the size and the fact we don't know about the treatment. Looking around ive seen a lovely yellow round 3 ct unheated round for sale for just about the same price. And that comes with an agl cert.

What Pesky point are you talking about?

The point at the bottom of the shank that's a structural issue

what's quite amazing is you pointed out the exact ring my girlfriend pointed out to me as an alternative from gabriel and co. Such a coincidence!

I do think that's a nice option. That company is a very nice quality for the price.
