I''m looking specifically for a Canadian diamond. The following is and AGS-certified one that a jeweler is offering me. I just wanted to make sure the price is fair. I know people usually need more statistics, but I''m just looking for a sanity check.

Weight = 0.90 ct
Clarity = SI1 (a few "Needle and feather" inclusions between the table and the girdle)
Table = 56.3%
Depth = 62.5%
Culet = pointed
Polish & Sym = Excellent
Fluorescence = Negligible

She wants $4850 for it, and that was negotiated down. It looks quite nice to me, but again, I''m a newbie.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Color? And what are the rest of the measurements from the cert?

Duh.

It''s an E color, the crown is 35.3 degrees and Pavilion is 43.3 degrees.

You sure those #''s are correct? The HCA won''t even take them as it is saying that either they are incorrect or the girdle is dangerously thin. What does the cert say about the girdle?

Most likely, the pavilion is expressed as a percent, which would make it work.

Deke...no black...it''s white or gray.

If it''s not only AGS...but AGS0 for light performance...which is possible...this is a great deal, I think. Check this out...and JA is typically a low priced vendor here.

But...if only from AGS...it''s gray. It''s 2.8 on the HCA...borderline for being in the box. But, in Garry''s new system, it might pass for his ideal. Probably, it was good to be sent to AGS at all in the first place, regardless. Also, though, if this is a cert without a cut grade...you could keep looking and that would be reasonable.

The numbers are correct, and the HCA returned a Visual Performance grade of 2.8 (I mixed up the table and depth when I did it the first time).

The girdle is thin-medium thick.

No Deke, it''s the pavilion reporting.

See this in the FAQ, for some perspective on different types of certs.

Msg to admin...this thread is on old and new. Probably you''d want to add a thread on AGS''s even newer certs as well. Maybe someone could find it.

Odds are on, though, this is a cert without a cut grade, but I could be wrong, which would make this a great deal.

CORRECTION! I meant to say that the color was F. And yes, the Pavilion was 40.9 degrees. It's the end of a long day. My apologies.

Thanks for the clarification on the different certs! I'll ask for a scanned copy of it (I won't be able to go back to the jeweler until this weekend, and I've been getting this info from her via phone).

It is an AGS DQR, so I guess it''s not as discriminating. (Attached)

So I take it that the consensus is that this is not a good deal? Any other suggestions for Canadian diamonds? My girlfriend is set on a Canadian one, even though the chances of buying a conflict diamond is so small these days.

Thanks for your patience and help!

I wouldn''t throw in the towel on this one. This one lands on the edge of the conservative estimate for AGS0. Take a look at it under different lighting conditions. Maybe your jeweler has a hearts and arrows scope so you can check for optical symmetry.

I''m with Whatmeworry on several points.

1) The diamond may be nice indeed...and you like it, right?

2) The price is, as you sought to confirm, probably more than reasonable

3) To be explored...the Canadian thing.

I''m not sure that Pricescope pulls together what I''d like to see about this...but...such as that it''s evolved...buying Canadian, I''m guessing...is more an expression and appreciation for the potential of "fair trade" issues...vs conflict.

Some background here, (with a good set of links from JohnQ for more reading, too).

Basically...you''re right about conflict...99% of all diamonds are non-conflict. But...Canada has probably, separately, set up fairness practices for laborers...separate from the conflict issue, that can be worth investing in.
