A customer of mine is looking to sell a ring, I'm in the market to buy one. Engagement ring. Neither of us are in the jewelry business.. Just want to make sure I pay a fair price and looking for any constructive feedback as to where I should be from a pricing standpoint in the negotiation. He may have overpaid and think its worth more and I am certainly no expert.

Appraisal by Universal geological services from 2009
Measurements 8.77-8.70 x 5.55mm
Shape/cut - round brilliant
Weight 2.70ct
Clarity SI1
Color H

Other card says EGL USA natural diamond report with same above info plus the following

Proportions
Depth 63.5%
Table 59%
Crown 15.7%
Pavillion 43.3%
Girdle medium to SL. Thick faceted
Culit none

Finish
Polish very good
Symetry very good

Clarity SI1
Color H

Fluorescence faint blue

The diamond has a band on it, im not as concerned about the price of the band. I can ballpark that, just want to make sure I'm in range with the diamond. Any research I have done involves new GIA certified diamonds vs used diamonds. Thanks in advance for any advice.

I would ask that the client submits the diamond to GIA for a new grading report. EGL is usually known for overgrading stones, so in reality, the H may be an I and the SI1 may be an SI2. Once you have a new report, you will be able to get a better price estimate.

What SimoneDi said. If your customer overpaid (likely given that it's an EGL USA graded stone which was probably sold by a B&M mall jeweller), they will likely want to get back as much of the cost as possible (like people who buy jewelry from Tiffany and expect it to retain its value once they take it out of the store - that ain't happening).

In the meantime, do a search on sites like James Allen for similar new stones graded by GIA and I would conservatively take 30-40% off that price for a 2nd hand stone.

Crown angle?? Can't be 15.7 and the girdle is too thick

I say forget it and walk away before hurt feelings begin. If he sends to GIA, He will be out 200.00 and have a grade report that is lower in several categories by a lot...

That stone could very well be a J or K and I1-2-3.

Walk away now while it is early...

EGL USA for a while only listed percentages for crown and pavillion angles on their reports. Not sure if they still do it now as when any Australian B&M retailer tells me that they have EGL graded stones, I automatically respond, GIA or nothing else.

Tell him you found out your GF wants an asscher cut diamond lol. They are hard to find...

I wouldn't buy it at all. Not good to mix business with friendships. I wouldn't touch the diamond either cause I can't rely on the cert. I would have it sent to GIA before I would ever consider it. And then send to BGD for a recut.

Thank you all for the advise. I did compare it to similar diamonds on James Allen just to see what would come up. There is such a huge difference in the price per 1 variable such as clarity I think the majority rules on best scenario being a new GIA appraisal.

My only other thought is to walk into three different local jewelers, see what they are willing to pay for it and start from there...

Here is a photo if you are interested in taking a look. Not a great quality photo but it is a nice looking ring.. diamond.jpg

Put it in between your fingers and take a pic of it facing up.

Again, I highly recommend you not buy this ring. If you want to go second hand (nothing wrong with that), look at the pre loved board here, loupe troop or diamond bistro.

IMG_3197.PNG It is a dog. D.O.G.

HCA is highly reliable. We toss anything over a 2 HCA.

This ring is a 4.1.

Only buy it if you want your GF to have a 2.7 carat turd on her finger... and don't think for one second that she isn't going to notice that her ring is inferior by a lot to a good ring.

Then you are going to be stuck with unloading this ring and having to start over and make your fiancee/wife happy.

You will save yourself a LOT of trouble by passing on this ring.

Price too good to be true? There is a reason for that....

I would also not recommend wasting B&M jewelers times asking them how much they would pay for a ring with a questionable EGL certificate (which EGL lab, because some are even worse than others).

Now, recutting is an option. You would have to start a new search and call places like Brian Gavin to see about that. Not all diamonds can be recut and you will lose some carat weight. But it might be an option. I think, however, you should suggest that to the seller, let him do it and get it recertified and THEN you decide if you want to buy the new stone or not. Let him take the hit on carat weight loss.

Hahahaha!! Whitewave you just made my day with that 2.70 carat turd comment. Honestly, I highly appreciate the feedback and being direct about it. I just spoke with the seller and he is trying to get 20k. A definite pass on the offer..

That being said I will check out those threads you recommended. I have a 10k cap and size is not the primary focal point. I'm looking for a great ring/deal. Pre-owned is not an issue. I would definitely feel much more comfortable having that GIA cert as well. Open to anymore suggestions.

Cut is most important. A well cut stone will look its carat weight.

Look for these parameters:

Depth 60-62.3

Table 54-58

Pavilion 40.6 to 40.9

Crown 34-35

I don't want you to look at any of those stones I listed: I figured you were getting ripped off on top of a turd stone so I was trying to get through to you!

We can help you find a good ring.
