Wow, I have been searching for a forum like this since I started researching and learning about engagement rings in March (actually started learning about diamonds prior to that when I got her a 1ct diamond tennis bracelet.)

This guy asked almost the same questions and expressed the same enthusiasm and relief of finding this site as I feel. I also have narrowed my search down to diamonds on the web. In fact I had a setting chosen as well as a nice diamond - approx 1ct for a total of just under 3000. The person from DOW emailed me and stated they needed to discuss my purchase. I had already sent in the credit card information and selected their money down and 6 month payment option.

As a little background, she wants a marquis cut, argh, trying to find the right one of those has been a pain. She mentioned white gold, which she loves, and really only wanted a simple ring - a solitaire. WHen we were playing around awhile back and I showed her some rings with sides stones and such, she felt they were great but too expensive. So Ihave been on a mission to find one that didnt break the bank. DOW does offer a five year upgrade, and a return no questions asked 30 day with no hidden agenda. I also knew, and have read here, that color and clarity arent the end all be all some make it out to be. I usually select d-i and vvs to SI2 which leaves me with a good amount of selections. Now I know many have expressed that it may look too big or the lady is saying she really doesnt care, when, well she does, but really that is not the case here. She would be happy with anything, a great woman to be sure! Problem, is me, I am not satisfied with just anything. So I will keep searching until I find it, funny thing is, and she nor does her family really know anything, I am sure they expect I will propose one day, but not sure when, lol, her mom stated today, it will prbably be ten years, joking, before I do.

On with the questions and story. Ah,yes, the lady from DOW I spoke with, I selected an EGL cert. told me that EGL standards are not as high as GIA and they do not carry the other, ASG I believe. I had selected an EGL that fit the parameters I was looking for a S3 and a color H. She even went on to tell me, that the S3 would almost be an I for GIA but the color should be fine. I believe the cut was excellent. Additionally she mentioned there would be a culet, which I knew fluor I wanted to keep none, but didnt really think much of the culet. She told me the culet shows a small hole in the bottom and suggested I select a few diamonds and add them to my cart and she would evaluate them for me. I am still in this process, which is how I ended up here. I will show you the setting and the diamond I like most, so far, and would appreciate your opinions, I know nothing about settings and this diamond does have a medium to faceted girdle, so this forum and search has me wondering about this.

Additionally, I know that uncertified diamonds are essentially the same as the certified diamonds with so much less in cost. You are paying for certification. My GF and I do not intend to sell the ring. And it is and should always be just a symbol of my unending love for her. But I do want it to shine and exemplify the beauty I see in her. She also says she had gone for a cleaning on her bracelet I got her, and tried some marquis cut 1CT and it looked too big on her finger, so she was thinking around .5. I just cant go that small, just doesnt feel right to me, so I am looking at quality diamonds around .73 or 3/4 along with the .5ct setting, will bring the total to around 1.2ct and stay within the budget of under 3000.

Any insight into the following I chose would be helpful.

In case you missed it, this was my response in my thread.

"Man, I dont know anything about the Marquise cuts, I''ve been exclusively searching for Round Brilliants. I wish you good luck though! I would definately take a look at some of the websites affiliated with Pricescope just for "balance". I originally had everything I needed picked out from DOTW, then I found this forum and realized just how many other great options there were, I ended up going with James Allen instead."

Thats the only real advise I have for you, look around some more, I found the quality of available diamonds at James Allen to very high, Good Old Gold and Whiteflash are great as well. Theres a reason those websites are so heavily favored around here, they haves some real quality stuff. BTW, I know its frustrating waiting for replys, I keep checking the website non-stop waiting to see if anyone has posted anything new in my thread! Anyways, everyone here is very helpful, and you''ll definately get the help youre looking for. Good luck dude.

In my honest opinion, I would probably shoot for F-G VS-2/SI-1 as a good middle ground for the "stats". Fancy cut stones have a tendency to show color more, and marquise show color in the tips in lower colors. All a matter of preference, though. Some like the warmer colors or better clarity. I went with a D SI-1 myself, but probably would have been fine with an E. I would probably go to an H or I in a round brillant.

On with the questions and story. Ah,yes, the lady from DOW I spoke with, I selected an EGL cert. told me that EGL standards are not as high as GIA and they do not carry the other, ASG I believe. What exactly is DOW? (sorry if this is obvious) ASG=AGS, S3=SI-3 Fluor is really a matter of preference in a stone. It's nothing to be concerned about unless it is strong/very strong, in which case a small handful of stones may appear milky or oily. A lot of people on this board, experts included, really like this feature. Important to mention, however, it will make a colorless stone less expensive and a near-colorless "face-up" whiter. The culet is not a "hole", but an extra polished facet on the bottom in place of a point (experts please correct me if I'm explaining this wrong.) Med-fac girdle is good, especially for a marquise where the points can be fragile.

If you go uncertified, make sure you have an independent appraisal before you buy and not from someone in the jewelry store. What size finger does your girlfriend have, btw?

This could be a promising stone-in order to get some guidelines, you can search on the site for Dave Atlas's AGA cut guidelines. It's only a guideline, though. The true test is your eyes! In order for the others to comment more, you probably need to get some images of the stone to evaluate and I would be interested in the crown height. Also find out what the SI-2 inclusions are, where they're located, and if the stone is eye-clean. Not all SI-2's are.

THanks man. Yeah I had done the James Allen research, bluenile, niceice.com, ice.com, tiffanys, epinions, bizrate, Zales, debeers, Kays and probably every online and store that I could think of or that was recommended. When I do research, I do research! LOL. But for all intents and purposes I found DOTW to be the est overall in terms of affordability, LOVE THE SETTING, and combo of all factors. Now I know what I want and where for the most part, now I need some advice on this, and probably other diamonds too I post, but overall how this diamond is going to react and look with this setting. I am also going back and looking again at JAMES ALLEN as we speak, sort of, and see some really nice ones as well, but would love to hear comments on this setting and diamond.

FYI - I agree, I saw how helpful these people were for you, and congrats man! Wish you the best. And thanks for taking the time to respond.

WOW Kitty. Thanks! I just want a stone thats pretty colorless and sparkles, not a big fan of cloudy.LOL. I know thats all she needs.

what do you think of the setting and a cut like this?

Yeah I made some typos there, sorry, long day and night for that matter. DOW is diamonds on the web.

and here is the GIA cert for it should answer the crown question:

oh, to clarify uncertified, I just cant in my right mind do that, too special of an occasion. I only posted that to express that it doesnt have to be spectacular, but would love for it to be wonderful. Sparkly! lol

No problem.:) I do like the setting, although I'm trying to visualize rounds next to a marquise...could be lovely! As you can see from my avatar, settings aren't really my thing.
2.gif
I think it might also look good with some side baguettes, or just pave on the band. If she was leaning toward a less flashy stone, are you sure she'd want side diamonds? I'm not trying to make you second-guess yourself-just offering food for thought!

I must be off to bed-I'm sure you'll have some more responses in the AM.
9.gif

ETA: Just saw your last post-the crown info isn't listed, which isn't abnormal. You would probably have to ask them to run a Sarin on the stone to get that info. Also, SI-2 feather may/may not be a concern-need to find out the location from the dealer. Can DOTW actually see these stones or are they virtual inventory?-again sorry if I missed this somewhere

In my first post, I had mentioned she like solitaire, but when she saw some of the others we looked at she just felt they would be too expensive but she loved them. Also if you look at the second like of the setting, you can click on the cut of diamond and it will show it in the setting.

btw, thanks again! Look forward to all the other posts!

I looked and the diamonds say sample image not actual size, which could mean its the diamond but size cannot be determined, or most likely, its a virtual diamond.
emcry.gif

Spicy- please don''t fret-if it''s virtual stone you can have it called in to the dealer. There may be a fee to do so (not sure how DOTW works) so you want to cover as many bases as you can before you do it.

PS The second setting is very pretty w/ the marquise. I personally might want something a *little* simpler, but you know your girl better than we do!

Ok, seriously have to sleep now...

Thanks. Any other feedback would be great too. I welcome all responses, it is a pretty big deal after all
emteeth.gif

So I looked, and I couldn''t really find any stones that were nice at 2K. I had to bring it up to about 2200, 2500 before the stones started to look good.

What do you mean started to look good. 2200-2500 is fine. I would like to keep it around .70C or 3/4, and in retrospect, with what SK said about the solitaire, I may end up doing that. Any recommendations? Like I said, for the most part I feel that I could get a very nice sparkly diamond that may be low on color and clarity and high in other areas like cut, keeping at 2:1 ratio I think it is, and high polish/symmetry - shows they took care of the stone in my opinion. It doesnt have to be the hope diamond, but it does have to be certified, sparkly and perty.

If you could recommend some, that would be most helpful, or anyone else for that matter. Remember, everyone, Marquis cut!

Not sure I like the small culet thought, shouldnt be an issue I think though

Also, feel free to recommend diamonds in that price range from other sites as well that fall under those parameters. In seeing Sleds diamond, I have gone back to JA and check out some more:

Heres one I found that looks pretty good:

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamond.asp?cid=131&item=1072631
I think it looks pretty good, too.

Yeah I actually found the group of .7 Ct you posted, 2340 isnt that big a deal on the other one. She has mentioned a few times about the solitaire, and with a solitaire setting I can got higher on the stone, so I may just do that, your thought kind of sealed the deal for me. I think mostly she mentioned the side settings werent necessary and even mentioned she would be fine with a .5Ct we could upgrade later, but this is our first time AND last time, so the prefectionist I am while still trying to maintain a sensible budget has led me here. As long as its around 3000 TOTAL for the setting and diamond, to include tax and such, its not a problem, but I am also on a mission to find a good deal as well and I think its out there. If it goes a little more, so be it, but I think mid to low 2000''s is achieavble with great results, sorry about the typos, im too tired to backtrack LOL.

I am selecting .7-1 Ct, IF - VS2, marquis of course, D-G, mostly around F/G like you suggested. And trying to find ones that have verygood polish to show that the dealer took care of the stone, in my opinion and Something I read here recently. I am trying to keep the table and depth (did I mix them off, cant remember) close to the ideal of 50-55 and 60-62 I believe it is.

I am also digging that little but of BFlour that many have talked about, nothing to make it cloudy, and those diamonds you selected are clear unlike some of the others from JA, but that may be the background too.

heres some I put up for comparison last night, I think yours are on there:

argh cant link the comparison

Thanks for all the help SK btw. I think they assign an ideal cut poster to a rough cut, LOL jk.

the .73 has a medium FL and I hear that some B FL in a diamond is desirable and I kind of think she might like it. How strong would it be at medium, this one is probably overall the best I have found particularly with a marquis cut. Her and her friggin marquis cuts, LMAO jk.

I wonder if the others will look bigger even though their Ct size is smaller, as I know Ct doesnt necessarily mean bigger.

LOL the two last ones you posted I think are my favs so far. Do you have any recommendations from other jewelers that may be worth checking?

medium, generally, is not very visible. it may look faintly, ghostly blue.

oops, previous post should be depth and table I meant for the ideal cut on a marquis of 50-55 and 60-62

thinking of this:

Item Number: 892603
Shape: Marquise
Carat weight: 0.73
Cut: Ideal
Color: D
Clarity: VS2
Certificate: GIA

Depth: 65.2%
Table: 59%

and this for the ring, she likes white gold, no if and or buts soo...

http://www.jamesallen.com/engagement-rings/classic-solitaire-settings.asp?module=setting&cid=57&item=795

I attached a pic of the two together, hope it works
