OK, so I talked to Lesely at Brian Gavin- she is so sweet!

She is helping me find some diamonds for some studs. She said it was OK to get the stones now and the setting in a few months. I am looking in the .5 ctw range, bezel setting. Here are my current options on stones (i dont have any other specs at the moments, except to know they are Brian Gavin stones):

1. uncertified, but meet brian''s cutting specs
.50 ctw G VS2
$700

or

2. certified
.61 ctw J SI1 that face up white
about $780

or

3. keep looking

and finally

would you pay $50 extra for the setting to be platinum vs WG?

I would trust anything they sold but do you think you will keep them forever? Or want to upgrade someday?

I probably would take the certified larger ones because I don't mind lower color and clarity especially for studs.

Also aren't they getting more stones soon?

I would go with uncerted Gvs2 and pay extra for platinum--its worth it

I would definitely pay the little bit extra for the platinum, it''s hypoallergenic and in my experience a lot of people seem to be able to wear it better than gold in their ears...

i will probably keep this pair and add a larger pair w/ a martini setting to the collection one day down the road.

Lesley said they can always special order anything.

If you are going to keep them forever then save the money and get uncertified if you really want G.

And for $50 I would go with platinum.

I am ok with them not being G, in fact, I told Lesly initially that i was looking for H-I SI1. I am just not sure about J stones. She can probaly find me some H/I SI1 stones in the larger size of .6 ctw.

I just bought a K VS1 from them to go with another stone I already own for studs. Its a little bigger than the stones you''re buying (I mention this because I feel like color may matter more for sizeable stones, not as much for the size we are buying) and I can''t tell that its a K (even compared to the G/H I have) until I look at them both from the side. His cutting is so superb that I feel like you won''t notice/care that they are J''s because you will be so blown away with the scintillation and fire. So, I''d go for the certified, larger J stones.

I''d ditto this - I''ve been surprised at how little color I can see in ideal-cut I''s and J''s when I look at them in person, especially from the front, since that''s the only way you will see them when they are worn in your ears

Not to get off the main topic of this thread, but I have never heard of platinum being hypoallergenic, there is alloy in the setting just like gold, so one could have a problem with platinum. Todd, would be interested in any articles you have on this. thanks.

Thanks AmberGretchen. I talked to brian last night and he said they would look very white face on, especially in a bezel setting. He said they would sparkle like mad. He did say that if I compare them to my e-ring, which is a G, that I would likely see a difference in color, but that on my ears in the bezel, they would look very white.

So, would you go for hte J VS2, or see if they can find I vs1 in the .3 range for the same price range??

I'd go with the J. I think J and K are GREAT for earrings if they are ideal cut. If you are going to bezel them especially, I don't think anyone would ever notice any warmth in them unless they were scrutinizing them in a side by side comparision (in which case I would notice the warmth in an H or I as well).
