I recently visited the Crater of Diamonds State Park and found wither a piece of glass or a diamond. It was in a part of the field that glass is probably not going to be abundant. I took the rock home and have been trying to figure out what it is. I did not know if a diamond would shatter if a moderate amount of blunt force was applied to it so I lightly dropped the head of a sledge hammer on it and it broke.
Could anybody tell me that this item is indeed not a diamond because it broke under a moderate amount of force?

Baaaad idea

Even though diamonds are the hardest substance on earth, that does not mean that they are unbreakable. If hit in just the right way, they can actually break quite easily sometimes.

well diamonds are hard but they can still break or shatter or chip quite easily.

i would have just taken it to a local jeweler and had them check it out before dropping the sledgehammer on it.

Coulda found someone with a diamond tester, couldn''t you? I mean, if it was a diamond, wouldn''t you be kicking yourself???

It was not a diamond. Stop worrying about it.

If it was a diamond, it would have been large (about .75 cm diameter) for a diamond find at the crater. It was already broken on two sides when I found it. It is crystal clear, but I know it''s not quartz. It had a light blue flourescence under light, which glass might also have. I also could not scratch it with a knife, although I also could not scratch glass with a knife. Any more info on the percentage that this is likely to be a diamond would be appreciated.

Could I receive a few more opinions on whether I should take this to a jeweler or just forget about it, please?

Any more opinions on whether or not I should bother taking this to jeweler would be appreciated, thank you.

If you're that curious, just take it to any local jeweller. It will take them a couple seconds to determine if it's a real diamond or not....they use some sort of a little probe that tests the heat conductivity. Most jewellers have one and use it to test whether or not a diamond is real or if it's a simulant, such as moissanite or cz. It works better than a sledge hammer.

If you read the Diamond Crater''s website, a real diamond is not crystal clear. You can see into the stone, but you can''t see through it. The rough diamonds have this opaque layer covering it on the outside almost as if it''s there for protective reasons.

Care to chance a guess how many good diamonds have been destroyed this way?

This is a joke, right?

Tell me this is a joke Ross. You "lightly dropped the head of a sledgehammer on it"????!

It has to be a joke...

Seriously, who in their right mind would try this as a test and then admit to it? If you really thought it was a diamond you shouldn''t chance destroying it. Ridiculous if I do say so myself. But seriously, take it to a jeweler and have them tell you its not a diamond.

Maybe the first time was a fluke. Try it again on one of the broken pieces and see if it happens again.

On a more serious note... I took a min to google this for you

Diamonds are also very good at conducting heat. Breathe on the surface of the stone and immediately check to see if it has fogged up. Again, quartz, glass, and cubic zirconium will stay hazy for a moment before the condensation dissipates, but you shouldn''t be able to see any moisture on a true diamond.

If you really found it at the crater of diamonds park, you should have asked one of the rangers. They are trained to identify stones in the park and would have saved you from this problem. Of course, since this is all a big joke, you didn''t know that, right?

You mean you''ve never heard of the sledgehammer test

to test whether it is quartz you could try drilling into it and see what happens. :)
