Hi everyone,

I am thinking about doing a project with a little round mahenge that I have. I love this gem - I've owned a lot of small mahenges, but I think this one is probably my very favorite. It is very saturated for the size, and one of the best things about it is the way that it holds its color in just about any lighting. This is a very important quality to me, and I've found it somewhat hard to find in smaller mahenges.
I've had to look at a lot of little mahenges to find this one. I tend to sell out of my collection a lot as my tastes change, but this is a gem that I never want to sell, I really love it. It's only about 5.3 mm round but it is very beautiful to me.

Anyway, I was thinking maybe a three stone necklace. I recently did a three stone ring and I guess I could do another one, but I'm leaning more towards a necklace. Maybe the hexagon style pendants that Yvonne Raley does. Just something minimal, but colorful.

I have a pair of blue Ceylon sapphires that are about 4.25(ish) mm, heat only. I also have as another option a pair of "purple" sapphires (termed purple by the seller, although I've never really seen a purple pair of sapphires before - these look more lavenderish to me, but again purple sapphires are not something I have any previous experience with).

The purple pair are 4 mm each, (no treatment at all, which is rare for me to get to own!), and they are well cut, especially for non precision cut sapphires. The cutting is much nicer on these than the blue pair. BUT I have a blue pair from the same parcel that are bezel set, so I know that even though the cut isn't ideal, these will look pretty nice once set (my other blues do).

So that's a round about way of saying that I'm more concerned about the color combo - what do you think? Does the purple sapphire/mahenge combo look too weird? Which do you like better, those or the blue combo? Or neither? Please be honest. I'm not great with color combos. I do have an opinion but I want to see what others think before I post my thoughts. LOTS of pics coming! (All were taken in varying shades of sunlight).

Ok, probably enough pics now! Here are a couple of another combo I'm considering, just for fun... It's a 2.12 ct merelani mint. I'm planning a ring for that though; just haven't decided if I want it to be a solitaire style or not.

Anyway I'd appreciate any thoughts/comments :)

I don't love it with either pair, honestly. The other colors aren't strong enough to stand up to the hot pink.

I have to admit I'm curious about the Mint and the purples.....

I would try the green/purple combo too. Do you have any mandarin garnets to try with the Mahenge?

I'm also not "feeling it" on either color combo. Light green strikes me as a possibility...could you put the mint garnet next to the mahenge for us? I know this would require a stone hunt, but isn't the answer always more colored stones? Jeff Davies seems to have some great namibian demantoid right now :naughty:

Thank you for your replies :)

I don't have any mandarin garnets, or anything orange - it's just not a color I like. I'm hoping to come up with something that I like and that will look nice together, but I'm not into an orange combo and I've already recently done my favorite (pink and green).

I don't "have" to do a combo, of course. But the mahenge is on the small side, so I feel like it needs a little help. I'm not usually a fan of halos, so I thought adding stones would be good. I don't know though - maybe I would like the right halo design for a pendant. It's typically just halo rings that I don't care for. I like them in earrings and sometimes pendants. Something to think about...

It's funny bc I didn't even think about trying the purple and mint together!! It never occurred to me. I just took some photos though, here you go - (the last one is n/s bc if I do a ring, it will have to be that way to fit).

I actually just sold a 4 mm pair of demantoids that I bought from Jeff, lol! They were gorgeous gems, but I didn't like the yellowy tint with the mahenge at all - I did check them out next to it. I also just did a three stone pink and green (mints and mahenges) very recently, it's in my avatar if you want to look :)

Always love purple and green combo, but I would think a round green should fit in there better. As for color combo, i think that's a go!

Lol - it's funny bc those pics are just for fun, I don't really want to do a three stone with the mint. I just want a solitaire setting for it. It's a bigger gem than I usually buy and I like that about it, over 2 cts so it will be great by itself.
But of course that's the one that works...

Given the choices, I prefer the blue sapphire with the Mahenge; and the light purple sapphires with the mint.

DK :))

Oh I checked out the thread on your avatar ring, no need for another similar to that since you nailed it! As for the mahenge - hot pink is really tough? White sapphire (white is technically a color)? Amethyst?

Thanks, glad you liked the three stone ring :)

I have a nice big beautiful ammy and I'll try that next to the mahenge just to see a general idea.

I have to admit though that I'm kind of leaning towards a halo pendant. This mahenge is so lovely to my eyes that a part of me doesn't want it competing with anything else color wise. I honestly can't believe I didn't think of it before but I always sort of think "no halos", lol. If I hadn't just done pink and green I might want to do it again. Although I suppose I could do a pink and green pendant to match the ring...obviously my thoughts are scattered and I'm all over the place with this potential project!! I'm not usually super matchy-matchy.

I really appreciate those of you who have posted your thoughts bc this is helping me work things out in my head. I personally think that the blue sapphires look better with the mahenge than the purples, but I still *like* the purple look with it better than the blue. I was leaning towards the purples, but I think I was trying to convince myself that it works simply bc I like all of the stones - that sounds so jumbled, I hope it makes some sense.

Katharath, I think your idea of a halo pendant with the mahenge is the best. It's such a gorgeous saturated yummy color, nothing else seems to stand up to it well. And why not let that ball of pink stand on its own, without distractions? Diamonds would be great with it.

If that gorgeous Mahenge were mine, I would tension set it on its own, in a Cobalt Chrome ring by Boone, in his Sculpted Round design.

I'm definitely leaning this way! Thanks Laurie :). This thread has helped clarify things for me.

That's a very nice setting. Usually rings are what I always go for, and a big part of me wants to do another one. I really could use a nice pendant though, I only have one pendant that I currently love vs several rings. It's a tough choice bc a part of me wants to be able to stare at this gem and thinks a pendant would be a bad idea. I have a great pair of mahenge earrings and a lovely mahenge ring, so I think I *should* do a pendant next.

God that mahenge is to die for! What about this pendant setting?

It's different than your usual style (which I LOVE) but that might be a fun change of pace.

I LOVE it!! You're right, it's not my usual style (and thank you for the compliment!!), but this is the general idea of what I would want to do with this mahenge. Thanks for posting, I'm going to bookmark it. That's out of my price range at this time, but I could start saving :)

I love the halo pendant idea as well! :appl:

Halo pendant!

Also, love the green with the purple! I saw the pic and it just made me smile!
