Is it possible to alter true prices on Polygon? For instance, a jeweler tells a customer "I will charge you 10% on top of wholesale." He then provides you w/a Polygon print out of all the stones that fit your prerequisites and says those are the wholesale prices. Can those those Polygon prices be inflated? So really the jeweler is charging 20, 30, or 40% more on top of wholesale?

Yes, it's possible. Heck, it's possible to make a printout that says just about anything you want. Then again, if you don't trust the dealer to be giving you a straight scoop on what he/she is telling you, don't just duck the deal, find another dealer.

Dealer cost and 'wholesale' are irrelevant concepts. Compare the offer YOU are getting with similar offers from other dealers. Buy the one that's the best deal for you. His cost is, at best, an academic question.

Thank you for the advice.

Sounds like the "deal" that you get from new car dealers that say they will sell you a car "at dealer invoice" and show you the invoice. Do you really think they can stay in business making $0 profit if they really do that?? Actually less than $0 since they have to pay the salesman a commission on the sale.

great example! I think Neil gave excellent advice as well. If you truly want to feel as though you've gotten the best deal possible, I would do a lot of comparison shopping, but be sure that you are comparing apples to apples though. The best deal often comes from online vendors who don't have the same operating costs and typically offer better policies such as trade in, buy back, warranties etc. which all can add significant value.

There is a built in way to mark-up the prices listed on Polygon and nearly every other site like it. The forces of the competitive market are the best safegaurd to buying right, but consumers never pay wholesale by definition. End users always pay retail, regardless of the small nature of the last profit added to the stone.
