I know that there are many topics to discuss it previously, but I am interested in the results of a poll.

Question: Will the pave/diamond-encrusted look go out of style, or is it essentially a classic and will look continually stylish?

All I know is that the first time I saw pave was on an eternity wedding band and this was sometime in the ''80s. If something that was popular in the ''80s is STILL around and popular, it''s gotta be a keeper!!

I do think that there are some style rings that are ''fads'', this is going back to the 60''s when my mom was engaged. Her ring was this swirly odd looking ring. It had a main stone that was a little off center and then about 4 other stone set sporadically in the ring, set in WG. I can see where at that time it was probably the ''style'' but it certainly isn''t now.

I don''t think pave will go out of style. I think it''s just adds to a classic solitare setting, sort of.

Pave'' will always be around. One of my rings was made in the late 1920''s and the entire band is done in pave''.

This is kind of my take on the situation as well...many of the beautiful rings with pave I adore are from the 20s!!!

So this is true for halos as well, right? Cause they''ve been around that long too!

Beautifully made pave will stay around for generations providing it is well fabricated. Style wise it''s been around for 200 years.

I think how hot, stylish or "in" pave is will vary over the years. I bet, bet, bet that there will periods when it looks dated (either vintage or early 2000''s) as more industrial, mod, chunky -OR- nature-centric: leaves, waves etc -OR- gasp, diamond-free looks experience revivals/popularity.

That said - beautifully made pave pieces with classic lines will always be coveted by a certain type of consumer ... and will remain just as gorgeous as the vintage pieces we oooh & ahhh over today ... and will probably launch a further revival of the style down the road a decade or few.

Thanks for the responses.

I definitely hope that it is here to stay. I remember seeing my first pave-ish ring. It was a couple of years ago, before I got into jewelry. Anyway, it was a Tiffany Legacy and I saw it on the Bachelor and I practically swooned.

There''s just something about well-done pave that takes my breath away.

I would hate to think that one day people will look at it and think, That was so 2010.

i think classic and understated pave will always be around..........(no offense to anyone ) but I think Beaudry and over done , over encristed pieces are already out of favor. yes the halo is a classic....bead set prongs and basket have been around since the teens I believe

I personally feel like pave itself is not going to go out of style, or if it does it will come back and ebb and flow...definitely. BUT I do agree that I think that I feel that is more pave in a more subdued form rather than some of the fully encrusted pieces we see sometimes...alot of the items from the 20''s and even from the teens or less that i have seen in person have some pave going on and maybe some head melee, but it''s not like the full 300 pieces of melee covering every inch of the ring kind of thing.

But will people be able to say well that style is soooo 2005 or whatever, I don''t think so necessarily.

One of my fave pieces ever was this 3c 1906 Cartier piece I tried on in a local store with bead set melee into the band (not sides I don''t think) and a little bit on the head. So classic!!!

Yes, I think my thoughts on it now is this:

Right now, pretty much everything we see in magazine ads and such are all PAVE, PAVE, and more PAVE. Of course it is not going to hold up in the long run -- we will see other styles come and go, probably sooner rather than later. Pave will not be as ubiquitous as it is right now on pricescope, in magazines, on TV, etc.

BUT that does not mean that pave will look dated in 20 years, I hope. It won''t look like totally in style, but it also won''t look completely out of style either.

BTW, I am surprised by these results. When I looked yesterday at one point, there were 14 votes and 11 said that pave would never go out of style, while 3 said it would. Then I look again and it is nearly 50-50? I wonder if people misunderstood the poll question to mean that pave would be as popular as it is now, which it obviously will not be. But whether or not it will look dated and unattractive in 20 years is another issue.

Totally agree. Pave will never go out of style, IMO but I think there will come a time when you don''t hear about it as much because some other style of e-ring is the ''center of attention''. Look at 3 stone rings...I don''t think those have been in or out of style, I think they just became more popular because of those commericals.

I saw that too Roxy about the poll, I like to hear from someone why they think it will go out of style, unless of course they did misunderstand, just to get their take on it.

I love my ring, I was just admiting it

. It reminds me of something that my grandpa would have given my grandma when they were engaged, in the late 30''s. I would love it was able to pass my ring on to my daughter or granddaughter.

I am curious too, Caribou.

For anyone willing to answer, why did you think pave will look dated in the future or go out of style????

Fashions go in cycles as we know and I think pave will become a classic option, along with Tiffany style solitaires, it will just be a matter of the wearer''s preference.

As someone who voted that Pave is a trend, I will try to clarify my stance. I don''t think it''s that cut and dry. I don''t think Pave is a trend; but, it certainly has been "trendy". Pave has been around for a very very long time - as has other styles. The styles ebb and flow. When Pave drops out of favor, it *may* appear "out of style". If you love it, just wait a year or so & some other design element will be soooo 2000 whatever. Eventually, Pave will come back into favor. I''ll wager a bet that yellow gold will come back in favor as well.

I never thought "bell bottoms" would come back in style. It''s just been renamed "flared".

In the end, choose a style that is pleasing to your eye.

Ha ha - I remember them first time around and wear boot cut or flared now too! Speaking of returning fashion trends, my daily paper had an article in it that Princess Diana''s big early eighties hair was coming back into style again, after Paris Hilton had hers cut similarly.

I agree completely about the trends going back and forth. My bf''s mom has a gorgeous, simple yellow gold setting. Even though yellow gold isn''t as trendy right now, I can''t help but admire it and I don''t think it looks dated.

F&I -- Your advice to choose something that is "pleasing to the eye" is very wise, I think, because you need something that you find beautiful if you want it to last forever, not just something in style. It''s very easy to get confused as to what one really wants in her heart when you get caught up in all the trends.

If you buy a beautiful pave ring that you love, why should you care about style? Styles come and go, but if you have something unique it will always stand out.

For a long time, no one wanted the OEC s in their elaborate settings. Now they are back. You should buy what you love and not worry that the style will change.

Styles come and go and many things that were out are now in--such as Victorian furniture, Tiffany lamps(L.C. Tiffany went bankrupt) and now furnture form the "50''s that many threw out.

I don''t really know what to think. When I was looking for my wedding band (to go with my plain 2mm e-ring setting), I really wanted an antique/flowery band, not exactly "encrusted" with diamonds, just something different but still "clean" looking. Our jeweler, who I LOVE, completely talked me out of it. His opinion was pretty much that "antique is very ''in'' right now," and he steered me toward the band I ended up getting, which is two rows of invisible-set princess stones...very classic and clean lines. I was kind of disappointed for a while, but I do love my rings now. I thought he had a good point, but I don''t see how any style you personally love can ever go "in" or "out" of style when the style is unique in your mind and is a reflection of what you find beautiful.

I voted not because I have always loved pave style rings. I love how smooth and clean they feel and look. When I look at my ring I think WOW, never do I worry that it will be out style. Funny thing, is that I have yet to see a micro-pave (Mara's rings) or halo micro-pave wedding set in person ( excluding a jewelery store) on anybody other than PS members.

P.S. I went to a Knottie meet up a month again and there were 12 girls and not one micro-pave engagement ring!

it's true..i was looking for that ritani solitaire online with google and happened across a thread on theknot where girls were like show me your christmas proposal rings...

i was surprised to see alot of them were small-ish, aka 0.50c or less and very simple styles, or the typical styles we think of like channel set with a center round, or solitaire. there was one or two tacori styles but that was it! it really struck me yet again what a microcosm PS is with our big ole gaudy designer or custom rings...tee hee.

Not to be mean, but half of the rings looked like they were from Kay Jewelers and only four or five rings were above .50 carat.
