Hi Guys,

I have a question for you all.
Please refer to my avatar for the ring in question.
I have a Leon Mege setting, with high polish sides, and a milgrained edge.
I've had it for a year, and it's now time for a polishing.

I'd prefer not to send it back to Leon for polishing.
Should I trust a local guy to polish it? Is this something you have to be highly skilled to do? Will they ruin the milgrained edge, and any other details?

Any suggestions for good jewelers in Boston, MA?
Jeff A (Aka Modified Brillant)do you have any recommendations?
I'd love to have Mark M do it, but I'm not sure he'd be willing?

Thanks,

you might at least try calling Leon and see if he has someone he might recommend. I probably wouldn''t want to send it back either just for a polish. I''d send Jeff and email to see if he has any advice as well. I highly doubt MM would do it

I''d just go to whomever. I seem to recall someone sending their ring back to Leon and it coming back all wonked anyway so I''m not sure his follow up care is all that controlled anyway.

i don''t see what to polish.... what needs polishing?
Won''t you polish all the lovely detail off? platinum is supposed to have a patina.

huh?

why is it supposed to have a patina?

I''m paranoid...and would probably send it to leon....expensive rings require expensive maintenance and it''s just not worth the risk of having someone else mess it up.

I agree... I''m planning to send my rings to ocean at least once a year. I''ll find one who can perform checks but I''d rather she do maintenance. The only reason I said this about leon''s rings is that he''s sourcing so much of his work out to his crew and I don''t know if they have the level of dedication he has. I''m probably speaking out of turn - either way if he screws it up at least he screwed it up. I''d take pics before I sent them to him though. Yikes. I sound so down on leon LOL I think he''s very talented.

Hi Folks,

Thanks for your responses.
Please note that the picture I linked is a year old. It''s definitely more scuffed up now.
I think patina on Platinum is definitely personal preference.

It was AllyCat that sent her ring back to Leon for work.
She sent it back to be sized down, and they messed up the milgrained edge.
They did fix it. That''s definitely what I''m afraid of. I don''t want to send it to Leon because of the length of time I''d be separated from my preciousssss. ; )

Any other recommendations for good jewelers/bench-people? Again, is polishing something you have to be highly skilled to do?
