i am considering an asscher or emerald cut and i notice many have only good symetry and good polish.............what impact should that have on the price. it doesnt seem that there is much price difference even with those differences

stick with vg/vg or better for calling stones in.
If the vendor has one in stock that''s lower find out why it got the grade it did.
Some times its an issue and some times it isn''t.

Storm gives good advice there.

Often Emerald cuts, asscher cuts, and princess cuts are cut with some of the facets at angles relative to the crystal structure that make it difficult to impossible to get perfect polish.

Paul Slegers at Infinity or Brian the Cutter at WhiteFlash can explain it better than I but the gist of it is that in some directions and angles, diamonds are softer and easier to polish than in others. Those facets will polish easier and faster and take a better polish than a facet along which the diamond is harder which may not under any circumstances take a perfect polish. In some diamonds it is not a problem, and in others it can be a nightmare for the cutter.

In some diamonds this may be totally invisible to the eye, and in others it can be clearly seen in the reflections from that facet, which is why Storm''s advice is good. Ask the vendor the affect the polishing and symmetry grades have on the visual aspects of the diamond. The if you think you want that diamond, make sure you have the right to return the diamond if you do not agree when you see it.
