Is it necessary to have excellent polish and symmetry if you are going to spend the money on a very well cut diamond? If not, is there a minimum grade that should be accepted? I think that I read somewhere that this becomes more important for larger diamonds? I am looking to buy a diamond that is around 2 carats. Any comments would be appreciated!

Hi Tyson,

Polish and symmetry are only two factors to consider
when purchasing a diamond. Diamonds with good/good
polish and symmetry can be very beautiful. Any thing above that is simply gravy and adds a prestige to the stone.

This can be a very complexed issue because the merits
of a diamond are literally found in a harmonious
blend of the best possible characteristics. A beautiful
diamonds appearance is not based on one factor, but
a combination of several factors which determine its
most desirable attributes.

Thank you for the response Kirk.

I plan to puchase a 2 ct. stone that is very well cut and I do not want to compromise the beauty of the cut of the stone with the polish or symmetry. I guess what I want to know is do I need to buy a diamond that is vg/vg or better to be safe? As long as the polish is not fair or poor does it matter? What does everybody think? Thanks!!!

Hi Tyson,

Perhaps this will help you further or even
confuse you more.

But the truth is that you can hypothetically
purchase a diamond with a VG/VG polish and
symmetry, but if the stone has lousy proportions,
you could still end up with a poor light performance
from the diamond.
