Pocketwatch 14kt chain and mystery mark

Not sure if this forum is the best one but I hope it''s ok.

I took a good look at my late uncle''s 14kt pocketwatch chain today for the first time in 6 years, and found two tiny round plaques on it, each saying "S.D. 14kt". These don''t appear to be added as any sort of personalization; his and the family initials are not anywhere near this. A couple of dealer types saw me wearing it and thought it was likely 1930s.

Does this refer to anything familiar to anyone out there? Thank you.

i agree that the plaques are most likely makers initials.
