Pls advise on durable round appr. 6 mm stone on a budget

Dear Pricescopers,

I hope you would be able to help me. I am helping my brother in law to create a perfekt engagement ring on a tightest budget ( he is trying to stay below 600 for the whole project). I managed to find a great setting and now we would need to fit a stone into it.

The setting is made to fit a 0.75ct diamond and it is a halo, thus there is not much tolerance in the measurements. I guess that would still should allow to set a 6 mm stone? Please correct me if I am wrong. Also I would be happy to send a link to the setting, if necessary.

We are looking for a well cut round stone, size of 0.75 diamond, with pale colour - pink-peach as a preferred alternative or periwinkle-lavender as fallback option. I am attaching the examples of colour that his future fiancee would love to see most. It should be a durable stone for daily wear.
The budget is ideally 100-150 usd, but I would jump in if we need to stretch it a bit for a great stone.

Could you please advise me, whether you might have any stone that would be of interest for us?

there is a pretty lavender spinel on Jeff's website that's 7mm: http://www.pinterest.com/pin/454441418620985351/ but not sure if the setting size tolerance allows for it!

and I've been staring at this peachy zircon (but it's a softer stone I think) on Jerry's site (http://www.gemartservices.com/for-sale.html) that's well under budget and 6.5mm! pretty sure the experts will weigh in to help soon :D

eta: I see you mentioned durability so i guess the zircon might be out, but the color and cut are gorgeous in my eyes!
 
I'm afraid the budget won't get you what you're looking for. Basically, if you want something durable in this color range, you're looking at spinels and sapphires. The orange pink color you're looking for is highly sought after in sapphires (padparadscha) and will be very expensive. Lavender/periwinkle may be more doable, especially if you don't mind a stone with a lot of grey (like the Jeff Davies spinel).

Has he already bought the setting? Since finding the right stone is so much harder, it's generally easier to start with that and then find a setting to go with it.

Maybe check out GemRite? John has several Spinels that are apx 6mm and well within budget - if at all possible, I'd recommend buying all three to see which has the color that fits your criteria... if that is not workable, perhaps John could take a photo and/or video of all three lined up so you could compare them. (Also, now that these are posted, if you are interested at all, you may want to contact John ASAP and ask that the one(s) you are interested in be reserved for you while your questions are being answered)

That Jeff Davies spinel is actually gray, so you definitely don't want that.

I have just contacted John and asked for the photos of the stones next to each other (and to reserve a violett spinel, if possible). I would really hate if someone would snatch that. Unfortunately, as I live in Europe, returns would be very troublesome, thus I really need to do it right the first time.

I hope that with the violett stone, I might have a perfect fall-back option. I would really try to comb the web-sites for another day to see whether I might find a peach stone.

Zirkon is beautiful, but probably not durable enough indeed. What do you guys think about is sapphire?

It is described as "From a nice Fanta orange to a peachy orange" but does look brownish on the last photo.
 
I worried that it would be too brown. The first two pics look pretty promising, but the last one...not so much.
 
Loving this one.

And if I remember correct 0.8 cts is 6mm(ideal cut diamond), so I think this size would be appropriate

Gorgeous. I also love the pink sapphire that Freke posted from Gemrite.
 
Wow, didn't realize pink spinels could be so affordable! The ones from Gemrite are a little different from the inspiration photos (not orangey pink, just straight-up pink), but they're beautiful and affordable. I think they're also close enough to 6mm to fit. Good luck!

I did check those stone, but spinel is tad on the grey side and zirkon will not be durable enough

Those links are so helpful. Just got additional photos from John. The pink spinels are gorgeous but unfortunately a tad too much on the pink side (not peachy), but I do hope that the violett one is actually sold out due to the fact that John has reserved it for me and not due to a lurker snatching it away :)

I love that violet spinel as well, and hope you find that its been reserved for you. I would, however, ask how similar in hand it will be to that color and tone.

For what it's worth, I've bought 2 stones from Gemrite, and the photos tend to show a little more blue than the stones actually have. These were both green garnets, though, and green garnets have a tendency to shift between more blue and more yellow depending on the lighting. I also don't know how this translates to a purple/pink stone, but I'd say asking for more pics won't hurt. John's cutting is great, by the way, a bit like Barry's, and with a spinel I think it will bring out a lot of dispersion and brilliance. I'd guess the video or the handshot is probably a more true reflection of the color than the other static shots. I hope it was you that bought it since it says "sold out" now!
 
I have also purchased from Gemrite; great vendor to deal with. I've found that the stones are less saturated (grayer) in person than pictured.

Sorry, just now seeing your question. What I meant is not literally how it looks against a hand, but to ask the vendor how representative the photos are of the stone - i.e., does it really look that color? Is it as saturated as the photos in typical diffused daylight? Tone-wise, are the vendor's photos accurate? Is it darker, lighter or on par with the photos? How does it look in different lighting - what does it do, for example, in fluorescent lighting? Is it accurate for hue? Of course, you can always just get the stone and return it if you don't like it... ;))

Sorry for the delay, but I was working hard is week.

So, a quick update from our side: at gorgeous lavender was bought by somebody else, even though I have asked John to reserve it. :nono: very said, as we are back to the step one here.

The pink spinels were really beautiful, but unfortunately were ruled out due to their straightforward pink colour.

The good thing is that my BIL carefully checked with his significant other and now decided to look for more colours. Looks like greys and yellow (and may be even pale greens) are also "in" on a stone-by stone basis. ;)

I have never thought that the search will turn out to be so challenging. Thanks God, I only have one BIL :lickout:
 
Chrysoberyl will be perfect! They are generally yellow green or green yellow, can be pale, looks great when cut as a round and very affordable.
