Dear all -
I have been reading this forum about buying diamond & gemstone (I just got engaged, and my fiance is giving me the luxury to choose the one that I like)...and this site is awesome, and very informative !

I have 2 round diamonds, and I was wondering if anyone here would be willing to help me pick up the best one -

1.31c - GIA (Ideal cut)
E color, VS1
7.13x7.09x4.31 mm
Depth : 60.6 %
Table : 56 %
Crown angle = 34.3 Crown % = 15.1
Pav angle = 40.6 Pav % = 43
Symmetry & Polish = EX
Girdle : Very Thin to Medium
Culet & Fluor : NONE
HCA = 0.6 (Excellent, except for the Spread = VG)

1.51c - GIA (Ideal cut)
E color, VS2
7.41x7.44x4.51 mm
Depth : 60.7 %
Table : 57 %
Crown angle = 34 Crown % = 14.7
Pav angle = 40.8 Pav % = 43
Symmetry & Polish = EX
Girdle : Medium, faceted
Culet & Fluor : NONE
HCA = 1 (Excellent, except for the Spread = VG)

Both happen to be a cut grade of 1A.

But, perhaps someone (or any experts in this forum) is willing to help me pick, which of the 2 above is the best option (for the brilliancy, quality & investment).

Thanks so much, everyone! And I look forward to hear from anyone...

How much do they each cost?

The 1.31c is about $12400, and the 1.51 is about $15K. My fiance thinks he likes the 1.51c....but is it really the best choice out of the 2? Thanks.

P.S : No, we have not seen the diamonds yet

I would choose #2 is you don't mind the price difference. But, it sounds as if you have seen them, and if that is true, you should let your eye's have a vote.

I would pick #2 because, you can't see the difference between VS1 or VS2. I had a VVS2 stone and nervously went to a VS2 stone and it honestly looks no different clarity-wise. And #2 is bigger (yeah!). Also, some lower HCA scores theoretically don't look as good because they have less contrast. Lower HCA is not always better. At this point, your eyes should pick.

The cuts on the two of them seem to be very similar, going just by the numbers provided. Can you get any more cut info, like maybe an idealscope picture, H&A pictures (if it's being marketed as one), or brilliancescope and ISEE2 results (usually harder to get)? There are other factors that affect light return besides just the numbers you provided, so it's hard to give a definitive judgement on which one is better cut. Can you tell a difference in their fire/brilliance/scintillation/symmetry when you look at them in different lighting conditions? Anyway, between the two, the color is the same, the clarity for all intensive purposes is the same, and assuming the cut is pretty close, the only real noticeable difference looks to be the size of the two stones, and of course the price difference. The real question is if the size difference is worth the extra money? There's a big price jump when you go over 1.5 carats, so while it will look a little bigger than the 1.31 carat, is it worth the big price jump?

The first stones girdle doesn't appear to be faceted. As long as the price is right, I'd go with the 1.5 ct.
