Please Help!!

I live in CA and just purchased a diamond from a FL wholesaler. The stone is VS2, Color F, Finish/Symmetry Excellent/Excellent for $14,700. The wholesaler said there wasn''t much difference between EGL and GIA when the stone is VS2 and Color F. I told him what I wanted and he called me with the stone a week later. Also, the wholesaler made a ring for me based on a picture.

I just got the right today, and sent a check back for Saturday delivery. I should have researched the EGL vs GIA before I purchased. I looked on the Internet today and realized that my diamond is from EGL Isreal. I saw on the internet how lenient the grading is for EGL Isreal. He also sent me a GAA report that showed the stone to be VS2, Color F with a value for replacement purposes of $31,194. Can I rely on this report?

What do you think I should do? I was planning on calling the wholesaler and see if I could return the stone and he can look for GIA stone with the same specs. Another option would be to take it to an independent appraiser that was provided on this site. What would you do?

He has been straight up with me so far. He sent the ring before I sent payment. Should I stop the check or can I expect him to make things right?

Why do you say he''s been "straight up" with you when you state he represented there''s no difference between a GIA and EGL report. As you have noted, there''s a HUGE difference, and any good industry expert would so testify under oath. I would stop the check quickly and consider one of the many good vendors on here.

Please take no offense to what I ask because they are sincere questions. Is stoping payment on the check really an option? You have his '14,000' ring that he made for you in your hand and he is waiting for your check?

Firstly if this person sells to the public they are a retailer, not a wholesaler. As you have read, EGL is not considered in the same light as GIA/ AGS, and EGL Israel in particular, can you cancel this transaction? There could be a lot of difference in the grading unfortunately, the stone could be H or I colour or less and SI clarity....

I talked with the jeweler and he did say that he would take it back. He indicated that it is a great stone. I am not going to stop payment, but I think I will take it to an independent appraiser in SoCal. I guess it costs roughly $100 to get it appraised.

The numbers on the diamond are not very good and the odds of it being a good performer are less than the chances of Santa coming down my chimney. Try plugging the numbers into the HCA and see what you get https://www.pricescope.com/cutadviser.asp

Taking it to an appraiser isn't a bad idea, but honestly, I would save the appraser fees, send it back, get a refund and find a diamond with better performance that has been graded by GIA or AGS.

And get the diamond from someone else. This guy has already sold you a bill of goods.

Well, you get what you pay for, and a GIA diamond of those specs, even only a good cut, would cost much much more. So maybe you paid a fair price for what the diamond is, perhaps an GIA graded H/I color and SI2 clarity.

I would get it appraised by a PS recommended appraiser and then go from there. He/she can tell you the approximate value of the diamond and you can decide if it is worth the price to you and if the cut quality is acceptable to you.

Me, I would just flat out return it and start over.

I just wouldn''t feel comfortable making a purchase of that size from someone who didn''t know that EGL certs are vastly inferior to GIA (and AGS) certs - if he 1) doesn''t know that or 2) wasn''t honest about it, either way, it doesn''t leave you with a good feeling, you know?

2 issues:

1. He lied about there being little difference between EGL Is. and GIA.

2. He''s not ''wholesale'' if he''s selling to you, the end-consumer - he''s a retailer posing as a wholesaler to dupe end consumers. And you''re inclined to trust him, so it''s working.

A little info on the "Tolkowski Cut". I think your jeweler was being a bit liberal with the term.
