Please Help with New Setting design

I personally don't like the iterations of the marquis without the cut outs that I originally sketched in them. Also, they appear too big to me. Not criticizing by any stretch @the_mother_thing as I know you are doing this for free, etc.

No offense taken. :wavey: The only issue I see with bezeling marquise diamonds into those cutouts - which visually I do like - is that the diamonds would be like 1mm wide unless the band were widened a good bit b/c you have to have room to bezel them. And I didn’t think @Maisie wanted a wide band. But if she does, it’s certainly doable.

Here are my favourites. I love them! I need to decide on the orientation of the bezel. And work out the side view. I love this basket....

@Maisie what are your diamond dimensions?

6.3mm is what I can remember off the top of my head

Of these last two choices you posted, I like the bottom one best for a couple of reasons:
  • I like how the shoulders naturally die into the flat side of the octagon bezel. They hit perfectly together where the bezel changes angles. That looks very fluid to me, and like it is "meant" to be that way.
  • I like the fact you see more of the triangle cut outs.
  • You can view the shoulder two different ways. The first is that you have triangle cut outs. But if you focus on the gold piece, it looks like a petal that is going to a sharp point, which terminates at a nice flat point on the center stone bezel.
  • On the top view, this same shoulder transition occurs BUT at a point on the center stone bezel and too much pointy stuff is going on -- you have the triangles competing, the center stone bezel point competing and then the pointy shoulder piece competing. IMO, it's just too many pointy objects trying to fight for the attention. The other view looks more balanced and natural.
  • Not to mention the shoulders on the top view don't have that nice smooth look either. It just sort of "exists".
  • Also if the letters M or W have any meaning to you, you can also see that as well (look at green).

Maybe these comments with my chicken scratch will make sense.

My surname begins with a W

I agree with all the points you made. I was leaning towards the second orientation too. I am decided on that for the top down view. I’m so excited!! I’m very grateful for all the help I’ve received here. This place is awesome!

If you want "rings" on the side, the part just before the band goes straight under the finger, make sure they are positioned where you want them to be on your finger. I had a ring with "rings" on the side and I think they were positioned too far down my finger, I would have preferred the whole thing designed so the "rings" were positioned higher up. I have small fingers, it might not be an issue for you.

Would you mind sharing a photo of the side of your ring?

As an old college professor said, "well, HOT DAMN!" :appl:

I'm not quite sure how that phrase came to be, but I smiled every time he would say it. More so, I am happy you have made a decision on this part of the ring! And I think it's really cool your surname starts with a W -- that part now has meaning. </end sentimental version of Sledge> ;)2

Aww I like sentimental Sledge!!

With the gallery view and going with the standard octagonal bezel, keep in mind where your gallery struts might be. The blue on this shows what I am talking about. I super suck at 3D drawing so ... yea.

It doesn’t look that tall in person.

As long as your diamond isn’t more than ~6mm deep (and I doubt it is), I believe you can do that just fine.

Would it look ok to have the head, bezel and shoulders brushed and the rest of the shank shiny?

As a practical matter, I don't know how you'd do that. You have a flex-shaft (think fancy dremel tool) or a bigger wheel and you are applying the texture. You really can't avoid getting it more all over than not. Its like sanding wood, you have to go through a bunch of levels of grit to get from just cut to funiture grade finish.

Tools vary, but if you skip through this you can look at the typical tools that take a cast piece to a polish. I usually pretty finish polish metal and then apply texture to make sure it is even.

Thank you for sharing that video! It was very interesting. I can see it’s not precise enough to only do part of the ring. So I need to decide. Shiny or brushed.

Please stay on topic

I suppose round as my diamond is round? Lol! I thought I had covered everything
I think the softened square shape or octagon would flow better with the octagon bezel. So, like the lower right image in your last collage or the octagon like the reverse arches.

Yep, doughnut/base of head is usually is the shape of the top bezel or halo.

You've got 8 very tiny sections of gallery. The #3 ring has 4 sides for that gallery design, so you'd have half the size for each segment. I don't know how large your center stone is, but I think you may need a smaller design in the gallery sections.

Well, I just found an octagonal halo with a the gallery not separated into 8 segments. This one appears to have a round base, but I would want a doughnut added below it.
