Hi
My backstory is in a thread called letting go of the old and looking for new. I''m in the process of looking for a diamond replacement. My budget is to spend 19k on the stone. I asked the jeweler to find me a diamond with the following specs: GIA 2.25ct round brilliant stone, excellent cut, ex polish, ex symmetry. H or I color, VS2 or SI1 clarity, no flourescence, medium faceted girdle.

He just showed me a diamond:

GIA cert # 5111021349 (how do I look up the certification?) I didn''t see the certification, not sure if it was at his store, but here are the specs:

measurement: 8.50-8.55 x 5.31 mm
Carat Weight: 2.37 carat
Color Grade: I
Clarity Grade: SI1: there is a carbon spot seen at the table that I could not see 8 inches away in the store lighting but is seen easily in the loop.
Cut grade: Excellent

Proportions:
Depth: 62.3%
Table: 56%
Crown angle: 36 degrees
Crown height: 16.0%
Pavillion angle: 40.8 degrees
Pavillion depth: 43.0%
girdle, thin to med faceted
cutlet: none

Polish: Excellent
Symmetry: Excellent
flourescence: none

The cut advisor says it has very good performance. I wasn''t looking for an AGS standard Ideal cut as I new that would go over budget. I wish I could display the GIA report to show the black carbon spot. Besides that one spot it was a clean diamond.

So is it a fair value???? Looks awesome in the store...wish I could see it in different lights.

Here's the report verification:

Not sure how to make it clickable.

Hi

Here is the ring "work in Progress". Sorry for the phone camera shots and poor quality. The setting is for a cushion diamond...so a semi custom will be done to that setting for the mount to fit a round brilliant. I dropped the potential stone in the mount just to get an idea how it would look. The diamond is the one under scrutiny.

I have no idealscope nor did the store...but I didn''t push it either.

I''m happy with the stone...hope I won''t regret the carbon spot.

I just want to know that I''m getting the right value for this stone.

questions:
should I ask to see the diamond in low lights to evaluate if it''s eye clean for sure?

If I go with palladium, should I ask them to milligrain the bezel? I''ve heard that palladium can scratch and if it does, the scratch isn''t easily buffed out.

Is this diamond worth 19K?

TIA!

Make sure you have a good return/inpection period if you buy it, and take it to be appraised by a qualified independent appraiser prior t osetting the stone. This will allow you to assess the cut quality and the eye cleanliness of the stone prior to finalizing the sale.

Ditto, it could be fine but depending on factors such as the overall cut precision and possible rounding issues, an Idealscope as SC mentions would be very useful to properly evaluate this diamond, an appraiser might have access to an Idealscope or ASET scope in order to get these images.

hmmm
I wonder if they'll let me have the stone since it's the insurance company who is making payment directly to the jeweler. I will research this a bit. Would it be unheard of to have them send in the quote, so payment will be made, then just hold off on the setting to have the stone appraised before setting? Then if I decide against the stone, I would have to be a real pesty customer and start the whole diamond search again, yikes. I don't really want to let this particular sparkley go.

My only real concern about the stone, is if it is truly eye clean and colorless to my eye in variable light situations. I'm happy with the cut grade as this is a big step up from the diamonds I had. If I could see the stone in low light situations to see if that carbon spot is not visable, that would make me more comfortable with this stone. I love everything else about it....just hesitant judging the eye clean thing in the store.

My husband hasn't even seen this stone yet...so I think I'll request another viewing with him and he can help me push to evaluate it under other lights to evaluate the eye clean factor.

Thanks for reading while I think aloud!

Any comments and advice is appreciated!

A reputable diamond vendor should have a return period for any diamonds it sells, no matter who sells it. And this is a lot of money. If you decide you do not like it, then start over. Don''t worry about being "pesky".

I''ve made my final decision about this diamond. I viewed it a second time in varying lights and it is eyeclean and very brilliant to a non expert eye. The actual price for the stone is $18,400.00. I think it''s a fair deal, but comments are appreciated!

I believe I have room in the budget to have the setting made in platinum, but this isn''t finalized. Since this is an insurance claim, I''ve been advised to get the best/biggest stone and best setting I can and I know I''ve met the claim to it''s fullest when jeweler says I''d have to kick money into my choices. Comments?

I''ve never owned a diamond with a color of I. Hope I like it, but I just won''t know until I live with it. Does anyone have any comments on how a GIA excellent cut "I" color will behave in a bezel setting?

Three months of finger nakedness, can''t wait to see it complete!
