Hi everybody. Wow. I must say this site has been really helpful. My interest in diamonds have really grown since starting to shop for an engagement ring. Those stones really are a pretty thing.

I would greatly appreciate some opinions on the following stone, please. (My jeweller managed to source it for me from a cutter in Israel.)

I ran this diamond through HCA and only got a score of 2.1. I think this might be due to the large table size and small crown angle? But my jeweller said the table size was not too big and neither was the crown angle too small, as it was the ratio between all the different factors that was most important. Any comments on this?

Also, I would be tremendously grateful if someone could explain to me (or direct me to where I can find out more information on) what the GIA cert terms, "star length", "lower half", and "faceted", each mean.

Thanks a billion in advance!

I''m not qualified to comment on your diamond, but I''ve seen some of the terms you mentioned (star and lower-half lengths).

This link explains it best and provides pictures to boot. :)

Thanks Wasser!

I can't say what this stone would look like, but generally those looking for ideal cut want the crown angle between 34 and 35 and the table from 54-57. I doubt most of us could detect the difference in the table size from 57 to 58. If the jeweler is claiming it is hearts and arrows, does he have idealscope photos to prove it?

(Here is the closest ideal cut stone to this one that I can find):

I haven''t asked for IS photos. (Not sure if the jeweller has them.) But I''m hoping to take my ideal scope down next week to look at the stone when it''s flown in.

By the way, who grades a stone to say whether or not it is a H&A?

As I understand it, whoever grades it as H&A does so; there is no standard.

Guess I''ll just have to go take a look with the IS then. Thanks!
