I am looking at a stone through bluenile.com An NWTXXXXX number is enscribed on the girdle. BN has faxed over a govn''t certificate of Authenticity, There''s a mark of a polar bear with the words "A Program of the Northwest Territories. It is signed by Joseph Handley, Premier Northwest Territories.

After entering that same NWT number on this site:

http://www.canadamark.com/Verify.asp

I received the following email from the company.....

Thank you for your query regarding your diamond. I can confirm that
the number you have submitted is not a number recognized as being part
of the CanadaMark Tracking Program. For further information you may
wish to consult your supplying dealer for details.
Should you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact
me.
Best Regards,
XXXX

I am under the impression that NWT and CanadaMark are not the same.

All genuine CanadaMark™ diamonds are lasered inscribed with the primary brand logo, the CanadaMark™ logo, the CanadaMark™ tracking number and are accompanied by a CanadaMark™ certificate card

The CanadaMark logo is the black arrow thing here: http://www.canadamark.com/Contact.asp

Sounds like a Polar Bear diamond. Polar Bear is not a part of the CanadaMark network (which is owned and operated by BHP Billiton) ..... Anyhow, Polar Bear mines directly with the government of the NWT who certify the diamonds.

You said your diamond was signed by the Premier of NWT which means it was certified by the government and most likely a polar bear diamond. Polar Bear is the only one that I know of that gets their diamonds certified by the government directly.

Polar Bear diamonds also typically come with GIA or AGS reports.

Contact Polar Bear directly and ask them to authenticate it.

Best of luck :)

GNWT is not Canadamark.

GNWT is the government of the NorthWest Territories. http://www.iti.gov.nt.ca/diamond/index.htm

Canadamark is a completely different service that serves similar objectives. To get the GNWT certification, a stone must be documentable as having been cut in NWT as well as mined there.

Thank you!

I just called Polar Bear and the diamond is theirs. He said it''s mined, cut, and polished in Canada. With the Canadamark stones, it just needs to be mined, not neccessarily cut and polished in Canada as well.

Awesome, I''m glad you solved that mystery :) I''m surprised Bluenile sells them, that''s news to me that they sell Canadian branded diamonds but based on what you said I guess that''s not how they advertise/brand them and it was more just of a coincidence that it was a polar bear diamond that one of their suppliers just happened to have I guess.
