IGI grades stone both unset and set. If it was graded while set, then all the data, is estimated.

The price sounds very cheap, so probably you should seek the help of an independent appraiser/gemologist to review the gradings. Check the prices for comparable stone on the PS search engine. $ 7500 for the 2 carat center stone - plus side diamonds and a platinum mounting sounds suspiciously too cheap.

I would also opt to have the stone graded loose, as grading while set MAY NOT be as comprehensive or accurate as you may wish.

Thanks for the reply. I should have noted that the ring is being sold by an individual after a broken relationship. I had assumed that this would affect the sales price.

The copy of the report that he sent me does not indicate whether the stone was evaluated mounted or unmounted. Should it?

Thanks.

If it was graded in the mounting yes. Although if this is an item previously worn, it should be checked for its current condition, by an expert of your choice, to make sure it isn''t chipped, abraded etc as welll as graded properly.

If you click on the top under "resouces" there is a comprehensive listing of appraiser who might be local to you that could do this.

Thanks again.

I will check the resources and follow up as you have suggested.
