...I know, I know, another "help me pick a diamond post"

I am a long-time lurker and first time poster.

I am in Canada and have a $2,100 budget for an engagement diamond.

Through my sneaky research with the soon to be fiancee I have figured out that she'd like a square princess cut diamond and it will be set in a half bezel 10k white gold setting.

So far, i've been able to find the diamond in the link below

http://www.jamesallen.com/#!/loose-diamonds/princess-cut/0.70-carat-G-color-VVS2-clarity-sku-191304

Is this a good diamond for the price? I would be looking for an equivalent or better diamond that is bigger than .66 carats.

Thanks in advance Pricescopers!

Greg

Hi Greg-

If you don't get a lot of bites, try reposting looking for help with a Princess cut to attract the people that know most about them. I don't know much about princess cuts myself, but it does seem like the table size on that is awfully large.

Thanks for the advice. Too bad I can't edit the post. I'll try reposting if i dont get any bites.

oh- that's much better! I wish I knew more about princesses to tell you how an H is for them, but I can say the fluor is definitely a help in a stone and BG inspects all of his Blue line to be sure all the effects are good!

From what I've heard ( I'm no princess expert either) h is as low as you'd want to go if you are worried about seeing a tint. Becomes apparent at an I. More so than rounds. With that flour it would be great! And save a few bucks

Ok, so I checked out BG's site and read about his Blue Series. I have a couple of questions that weren't answered on the site:

Under normal lighting, will a blue diamond appear the same as a non-blue diamond? i am having a hard time understanding what the difference is to the naked eye.

The setting in the second link in the post is pretty much exactly what she described to me as her ideal setting.

thanks for the responses so far, you've all been super helpful!

How about calling IDJ? http://idjewelryonline.com/index.php

Your budget is fairly low, and many people have had amazing luck with them. Ask them to find you the biggest and best diamond for your budget - they should be able to recommend a few stones.

Good luck!

his blue line is just for rounds. I agree with twolittlebirds to call ID Jewelry.

The flour is only visible in UV light. And will only make it look blue in like a black light
At most, for some very strong blue ones, it looks the slightest bit blue in direct sunlight. But in general it just helps the stone looks whiter, not blue

The only time you are going to see that bright blue color is under a black light, so most of the time they'll look the same. I forgot to check how strong the fluor was on that princess, but in sunlight the fluor sort of "counteracts" tint, I don't know how else to describe it. Under fluorescent (office type) lights you may also see some effects (or maybe not). With a Very Strong Blue and Strong Blue, I been able detect fluor in office type lighting, but that could just be me and only if I'm looking for it. The stone in my avatar is an I with Medium Blue Fluor. The little accent stones are G/H.

ID Jewelry is also a good possibility for a tight budget.

I'll have a look at ID jeweller also. My budget is only $2100 for the stone because I've assumed about $1000 for the setting. My overall budget for the stone and setting is $3000

the fluor on the BG stone was Strong (according to the report)

My pear is strong blue and I love it!
I never really notice blue but when I do I love love love it. So neat

I forgot yours was blue! I think anything else I ever do Blue will be on the "yes, please!" list! Love them! Can you see hints of it in regular fluorescent lighting with Strong Blue, or am I just an aberration?

With ID Jewelry, you'll need to call them and tell them you are from PS and tell them what you are looking for and your budget and then see what Yekutiel comes up with.

thanks for all the help everyone. I will figure out a few more things from my girlfriend tonight and I will call ID tomorrow.

Thanks again,
G

In direct sunlight and (I swear) I'm some jewelry store lighting at my work I can see a little. I wish o could see it more. Its my favorite part of my diamond. This pic is in the old setting and the fire makes it look milky but it isn't, but you can see some blue (the sides look blue too but I swear it gives the body a bit of a tint)

This one you can see a little more ;)

Of course the Blue is very nice, I just usually don't read the whole thread...

And if that half bezel is what she wants then all the better, that BGD has one.

I assume you were referring to the one i posted from James Allen in the first post?

unless she had a very secific about what type of half bezel id really have you consider that sholt. they make absolutly beautiful rings and with that stone and this setting and a Ps and wire discount it would probably be around 3100 or so.

you really couldnt be th equality of that ring. heres one with an emerald cut and its just amazing. It might not be exactly what she showed you but its a good idea if she likes half bezels, but jsut a thuoght, if she set on a more ridged one than go with that :))https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/ec-in-sholdt-semi-bezel-pearlmans-pics.180994/

I think Julie was saying that the first one posted (from JA) left a lot to be desired, but the BG one is pretty much guaranteed to perform well. It's what he does. All his in house stones are cut to his particular specifications for performance. You would not be disappointed in a BG stone.

I did not realize they offered a Pricescope discount. I really like that diamond and the more i think about it the more it makes sense to go with the Blue.

I will wait for some others to chime in and also will have to talk to my girlfriend about the bezel style.

The BGD blue looks great. It'd be my pick. :))

I'd put a hold on that stone while you decide. Don't want to lose it.

And as for the setting, if this isn't a surprise I'd run it by her. They really are beautiful, and the extra increase from 10-14k does just make it a nice piece for the few hundred extra. If you can swing it

Excellent advice. I'll put a hold on it. I am pretty sure I can swing an extra $500.... Once it crosses the border I have to pay $500 in sales tax.
