Hey everyone. I've actively looking for specific diamond and wasnt able to find any that fit my criteria. Please help me review the following specs to see if I got a winner or not...

Round Cut
1.42 ct
G Color
VS2
XXX
Fluorescence - None
7.29 - 7.32 x 4.41 mm
Crown Angel - 32.5
Pavilion Angel - 41
table - 58%
Depth - 60.3%

Gia # 2156271624

Please let me know how much I should be paying for this diamond

Thank you!

Thanks for the input. I got quoted 12,300 from a local jeweler. Do you think I could negotiate the price under 11,500?

How much does JA mark up on their loose diamonds?

Thanks again!

I'm not an expert so I could be wrong, but the crown angle looks a bit shallow and the table is slightly large.

JA doesn't mark up their diamonds. They offer PS members a 1-5% discount on their stones and also have a wire discount. Negotiating your stone by almost 1k sounds like a challenge...if it's a family friend then maybe it's possible....What's your actual budget? If it's 11,500 then I'd suggest looking at something smaller or lower clarity or color...example:

Thank you for your response. my actual budget for the stone is $11500. I really dont want to sacrifice the size and quality.

Someone told me that if the table and depth is close to size, that it would be more of an ideal stone. Could someone clarify that?

Thanks

Well a stone that's 12,300 is quite a bit higher than 11,500.....Have you spoken to the jeweler? Do they even negotiate? Most jewelers will only take off a couple hundred at most unless you have a connection. If you're not willing to sacrifice size or quality then you'll have to pay for it...

I haven't negotiated yet. I wanted to do my research and get opinions before I start negotiating.

Actually, JA does mark up their diamonds otherwise they would have gone bankrupt years ago. They just do not mark them up very much, and they include enough to offer PS members a discount while still making a profit at the end of the year.

As far as negotiating the price down to $11,500, I predict it will not happen. I just did a search on the market for such a stone (GIA with XXX fitting your size and quality parameters) at cost and found only 17 stones at $11,500 or below and most of those were within $100 to $300, which is not enough markup to cover the cost of getting the stone and inspecting it and sending it back if it fails inspection and paying anything for the jeweler's time. So at a $100 to $300 mark up on an $11,500 budget assuming three to five hours total spent on the sale, the jeweler would actually be selling at a loss by the time he paid his staff and his rent. (And yes, there are many stones with GIA XXX that will fail inspection by a discerning cut aficionado.)

If you are fantastically lucky, you will find a B&M jeweler not smart enough to raise his prices with the market who has an old stone you could snag at $11,500. Do not expect him to be their long to service your needs in the future as the market is brutal when it comes to weeding out the unprepared and inefficient business people.

While it will not be a popular answer, you are very unlikely to get the stone you are wanting at the price you are willing to pay. (Of course, now that I have said this out loud, maybe someone will decide to advertise by selling you such a stone at the price you want.)

Wink,

Wow. thank you for your help. after doing more research about the dimensions of this stone. Do you think the crown is a bit shallow? Would I lose some fire but gain more brightness?

Thanks again.

Larger table and shallow crown angle means it has more spread. It will look like a 1.5 for a good bit less than a 1.5 usually costs,

Thanks for the help.
