Hi I am new here and would appreciate any help given to me. I've done a ton of research on emerald cut diamonds and am now on the hunt for the perfect diamond. Of the many online retailers I seem to find myself going back to two lumeradiamonds and northamericandiamondbrokers. Has anyone ever used them? Can you recommend anyone else? I live in NY and have went to a bunch of jewelers and to the diamond district offices, everyone seems to be all over the place. Even online, most of the retailers seem to use the same databases yet their prices aren't the same for the same diamond. Anyway, I have a budget of around 25k for around the 2 carat area. Can anyone give me some pointers on how I can get the best bang for my buck?

Thanks,

Jimmy

Call Jonathan at Good Old Gold - he's on Long Island. Tell him what you're looking for, and he *will* find it for you. Very reputable vendor here, too.

Jimmy, you have a great budget and should be able to find that perfect diamond. Clarity is extremely important when looking at emerald cut diamonds. The faceting allows you to be able to see into the diamond and at 2.00ct +, you should go VS1. In terms of color, you can go for F or G color. F is considered to be 'colorless' and G is 'near colorless'. Length to width ratio is also something you should be aware of. You want that classic emerald cut shape so be sure to check the l:w ratio when you are searching. From what I can see, you should be able to get a 2.00ct F color, VS1 for your budget (if not a few bucks less!). Hope this helps!!

if you live in new york you should deal with and call Good old Gold . They are on line retailer and they are in Long Island I believe. They seem to be very popular and I believe they also cut their own stones. Deal in primarily GIA certified stones. Of course he other eretailers are terrific but that is a starting point if you want a B&M building to meet a diamond guy at.

I've been stalking diamond sights for a long time and have never heard of either of the on line sights that you are looking at. I am a Jersey girl and I have bought several larger pieces from a well known 47th street store owner and I am now convinced that eshopping is the way to go for any other diamonds I buy.

Again call GOG and check out their web sight. Then come back and the PS community will help you select the best stone. Remember Cut is the most important C......all the others can be negotiated. http://www.goodoldgold.com/About_Good_Old_Gold/

to look at different stones I would also go to James allen I love that you can look at all views f their stones. Have fun.

Maggie I am not sure that is entirely accurate I have a 3.66 GIA H si1 there is one tiny inclusion just at 11:00 position and you can see right through the stone it is sooo clear and clean. So it depends on the stone. I agree he has a great budget and can get a great stone. The cut is key and the color and clarity will fall into place after finding an excellent cut stone. JUSt my HO. Thanks

Heidi, that's great you have an SI1 that size and it's totally eye clean. I wonder how it was graded by GIA as an SI1 with only one tiny inclusion. That's a great stone for sure! Typically though I believe one should start a little higher in clarity as you can see very clearly into a step cut diamond. Of course... it all depends on the diamond itself. I also agree that cut is important (perhaps the most important) but I also value color and clarity. You have a great budget and will find that perfect diamond!

Cut quality is king. A well cut stone will even face up whiter than a poorly cut stone of the same color. That said, step cuts do show more body color and inclusions than brilliant cut stones (for example). If you want "white" stay H or better; BUT there are some *gorgeous* stones of lower color out there (who was it that posted the K colored emerald 3-stone recently?) - color is really a personal preference. Clarity needs to be assessed on a stone by stone basis, as location and type of inclusion can make a huge difference in their visibility (as well as how keen your eyes are!).

Since you live in NY, there are a few reputable vendors in NY; you could contact and ask them to search for suitable stones for you.

EngagementRingsDirect (Mark or Chris)
ID Jewelry (Yekutiel or Luann)
James Allen - they have an office in NY where you can view the diamonds you have selected. I would suggest emailing Jim Schultz directly and see what he can find for you.
Diamonds by Lauren (David, who is known as Rockdiamond on PS, posts here from time to time)

off topic but David has an absolutely droolworthy D VVS1 5 carat emerald cut diamond...if only I had an extra $380k lying around...

Good luck!

I was very pleased with Diamond by Lauren for mine...

I went with a warmer color than most like K and IF clarity. 2.03 cts. My ratio is also lower 1.22.

Thanks for all of the replies, I'm going to check out good old gold since its 15 minutes away from me. Regarding the cut, is there a grading system for diamond cut? I read that GIA only grades cut for round diamonds...if that's true how will I know if its an excellent cut? I'd hope I don't have to take the word of the jeweler selling me the stone. Also, I've attached two pics of what I'm trying to accomplish with the diamond. Comments are appreciated.
