Hello Everyone,

I want to propose to my girlfriend this summer and I'm now in search of a beautiful OVAL diamond. I am looking for 1.9 carat ( more chunky as opposed to skinny shape) , I color or higher, eye-clean, crisp faceting for larger flashes of sparkle ( no mush) and eliminating as much bowtie as possible. I am trying to focus on finding a spready diamond ( that is not too shallow) and am more concerned about dimensions than actual carat weight. My girlfriends finger size is 3.75.

My budget for the stone is 13k or so. I will be setting the oval in a halo setting (Likely Victor Canera). Calling all PS experts (Help!) as I am having a hard time finding a nice oval.

First, I'd like to say that I'm in no way an "oval expert"... however, there are several PS members that are really good with fancies, so I hope they'll chime in!

Here are a few I liked:
(must hit Ctrl when clicking on BN links...)

8.97 x 6.43 - H/VS1 - This one is a little longer than you specified, but it is larger...

8.39 x 6.58 - G/VS2 - This one is my favorite. It's a little smaller, but the faceting and shape look lovely!

I realize these are smaller than 1.9 ct, but I didn't know if you'd be comfortable with color below H... What is the L & W you're trying to get close to (as carat weight won't tell the face up size)?

I looked at JA, but didn't like any of the ovals in your budget and D-I, SI1 and better, 1.7+ ct.

Ideally I would like to stay at H or higher as well since ovals do show color more than some other cuts- However if I want the biggest diamond for that price range I may have to drop down to an I (Hoping a high I)- though I'm color sensitive and so is my gf. She has super tiny fingers so she's really hoping with the halo that she will have some amazing finger coverage.

Thank you for taking the time to look for these stones msopo04- I haven't thought about ratios - I typically like the elongated look however with ovals I find when they are skinny they end up looking almost like a marquise if that makes sense- so I like them to be fatter. I like the faceting and shape of the second stone you posted- though the dimensions are not as big as I'd like its really beautiful.

There is only a 4% face up difference in the ovals I posted, so I would most definitely want the chubbier one -- especially in a halo. I wouldn't go to I color in an oval.

I'll do a size comparison for you... brb...

OP
If you are looking for VC to set your stone in a halo why not let VC source the stone? Ask Victor to show you some options.

Also, Chris at BE does beautiful halo work and can source your stone. You will also pay less in total than VC.

My avatar is fuzzy , but it was done by BE.

The pic on the left is comparing the dimensions of the two ovals I listed. The top shows the chubbier oval alone, then with a 1.5 mm "halo" to show the finger coverage a halo would give. All are shown on a size 3.75 finger.

Hope this helps!

Another setting idea you may want to consider is to do an airline halo similar to the one in this pic:

This is a (rather poor) mockup of the additional finger coverage you'd expect if you liked this style setting:

I am checking with Victor but in the meantime I thought I'd ask here as well- for a chubbier oval what is the ideal ratio I should be looking at? I am also going to look at some stones in person with a local jeweler ( since I've never done that at all) - what are some things I should look out for?

I like the JA Diamond posted- though I see some mush- or is that a reflection?

I do like the last oval posted- though I'm thinking I should stick with H or higher for color. What are your thoughts on SI2 ovals? I know that there are a lot of terrible ovals out there but I know a local jeweler that should be able to find something for me that is "eye clean"- I feel like I'm more sensitive to color and would rather get a bigger diamond ( 2ct) with higher color for the budget.
