are "prongs" decribing just the hooks or little nubs that you see on the surface of the diamond when you look at it face up, or are prongs referring to the entire leg of support, not just the little hook/nubs. i am getting so confused :/

The prongs are what hold the diamond in the setting if it is a basket or head setting. A bezel setting is held in by a ring of metal. The nubs are the tips of the prongs. The head is the entire holder with the tips.

Entire ''leg''.

Prong refers to the entire '' leg'' of support, prong tip refers to the end of the prong that reaches to the top of the stone.
