Hi,
I'm from Australia and I've been searching around and want to get the right stone for my lady. I want the stone to be set in the classic Tiffany knife edge ring in platinum or white gold or a replica ring of this style. I was looking to spend up to around 8,000 on the diamond if need be, but I wouldn't mind less if it means better value. The diamond I was looking at getting a round 1 carrot stone in an F color, VS2 upwards with triple excellent. I was looking at this diamond:

https://myapps.gia.edu/ReportCheckPortal/getReportData.do?&reportno=5136128106&weight=1.01#

They have it for AU$8120 through Jogia Diamonds. I just have so many questions...

1. Is this a good stone? or if not, what should I look for or can you recommend me one?
2. Is it a good price?
3. I am not from Sydney so it would have to be posted to me and I wouldn't be able to see it, should I avoid this? or if I buy like this, what should I do once I receive it?
4. The Florescence is 'Faint', I've read this shouldn't matter much. One jeweler I went to tried telling me that up here in sunny north QLD that it will show a lot more outside in the sun than in less sunny places like down south more. Is this true or should I just not worry with the Faint fluorescence?
5. Are the proportions OK? I would love for the diamond to really sparkle. I've looked at hearts and arrows diamonds, but is there alot of difference for these?
6. Is it safe buying diamonds over the internet/phone like this?
7. Am I better off buying from within my country or should I also look at the USA or other countries?

Any help and comments are very, very much appreciated. I like to research as much as I can and seek help from others who are more knowledgeable than myself before making purchases of value like this to make sure everything is OK. That's all I can think of for now but if I think of something else I will add it in.
Thanks guys!

HI:

Welcome!

I am not sure if you are saying you are comfortable buying online--while it is a common practice, you seem to have reservations.

Once you settle on a diamond, where are you planning to have the diamond set?

Is there a reason you have found an "F" colored diamond--that adds a significant cost premium to a stone. Personally I find it very desirable, but you also mentioned if you could spend less and find something great, you would. G and H colored stones, with the same pedegree you have choosen are very good choices/desirable.

Faint fluoro is a non issue. Doubt it would be detectable outside of a lab--and certianly not outside in the sunshine! OKOK someone better at this can call me on that statement if they like.... :saint:

We have lots of Australian folks on this forum who have purchased not only online, but from online overseas/ US vendors. And are satisfied! But there are duties, shipping, insurance, etc, to be dealt with.

cheers--Sharon

Thanks for the reply!

I do have a little reservation about it, but if I know they are reputable I will feel a lot better about it.

I'm not sure yet about where to get it set... I could go down to a G stone over the F if it makes a difference in price. I just thought the colorless stones would be a lot nicer.

I didn't think the fluro would make such a big difference I just wasn't sure as I've never really looked into this ever before so I'd rather ask some people who I know would tell the truth rather than a salesperson.

:)

HI:

Would you consider having the same vendor who sells you the diamond, also set the stone?

Is this a surprise--are you sure your GF wants a Tiffany-esque setting?

G & H are in the colorless range. There are some folks who are very color sensitive and therefore stick to the D/E/F colors, but stones that are very well cut are key. I would never dissuede anyone from buying D/E/F stones, but it is incorrect to assume, based strickly on color that it will be a nicer stone. Again, cut.

There are many reputable vendors who have a large online businesses--and some also have B & M establishments. I do not know the AU vendor you posted, but that doesn't mean anything. Perhaps others will chime in about the vendor you mentioned.

cheers--Sharon

Similar diamonds that are a G are from 7424, is this good value?

Many of us here think that well cut G/H colored stones represent the best value. I personally think it's impossible to see the difference between a G and a D/E/F unless they are unset and upside down side by side. I would never be able to see the difference between an F and a G regardless of viewing environment. But CG said, some people are extremely color sensitive, but I also agree that CUT determines beauty not color.

I think all of my diamond purchases with the exception of a couple of Tiffany visits were conducted internationally over the internet. The only issue I have ever had is the annoyance and expense of returning things if they are not quite what I wanted.

I haven't personally bought from Jogia, but I know a fellow Aussie who buys from them a bit and is really happy with them. I think it might be Laraonline.

I think most of us buy from the states because there is a larger selection and the prices are usually better even once you consider sales and import taxes etc.

I would always recommend that you buy your setting from the same place as the diamond whenever suitable, as it cuts out a lot of hassle and risk.

Finally most people, myself included wants the largest, sparkliest stone they can afford. Color and clarity seem really important now but when your GF shows it off to her friends no one is going to ask what the color grade is for example. They are all gonna ask how big and comment on the sparkles coming off it. With this in mind I would recommend to anyone but the most OCD PSer to choose the best cut stone that is a G-H-I, VS1-2 when buying unseen over the internet. And as large as the budget will allow (within reason). That way you get the most bang for your buck. And a beautiful stone without paying the premiums.

Thanks for all the replies guys and girls! Your feedback is very much approached. The jeweller I am going to get the ring through only sets their own diamonds so I've been having a look at what they have to offer. The jeweler is not local to me so I cannot see the diamond but they source them from the US. This is the diamond GIA report:

http://www.gia.edu/cs/Satellite?rep...ename=GIA/Dispatcher&c=Page&cid=1355954554547

The diamond is $6000... Is this ok for a 1.01ct H SI1?

The G VS2 they showed actually looked worse on the report than this stone and it was about $1700 more.

Is there anything wrong with the above stone? I asked if they could find out to make sure the diamond is eye clean.

Opinions please would be much much much appreciated!

Thank you guys!

Hi

I would say G color would be Perfect if you buying the stone with excellent Cut, Faint fluo does not make any impact negative
on the stone, it appears Just as None fluo would under regular lights.
I think buying Diamonds online is safe and wise so long you buy from the reputed online store & I think buying from US online stores
are recommended as you could save, I think in Australia same stone would cost you bit more.

HCA Score of the stone is 2.6 and in my opinion if stone is eye clean it is good.

Thanks for the replies... Which of these diamonds would be better?

$7242

$6378

$6781

The first two are from BlueNile and they have told me from viewing at 6-8 inches the stones are eye clean. The third is from Zoara and is supposed to be eye clean according to the site. Prices are listed above. Or if you have any other recommendations it would be very much appreciated. I want o buy a stone very very very soon!

Thank you guys so much!!!
