Hello all, can you please help me out. I'm looking at 3 engagement ring:

1. .63 H VS2 (AGS - Bluenile Signature Cut) - $2,000
2. .64 G VS2 (GIA - Mondera "H&A") - $2,250
3. .73 I SI1 (GIA - Mondera "H&A") - $2,350

Assuming all are "Ideal Cut" (good crown and pavillion angles with good table and depth %) and discounting fluroscene, girdle or cutlet, which one would you suggest? Will I really notice a difference in size between the .63 and .73. Will I really notice a color difference from G, H & I?

I'm in a real bind, I'm a novice, this is my first buying a diamond ring. Your help is much appreciated.

By no means am I an expert on diamonds, but from what I learned on this website, cut is THE most important thing. See if you can get more information on the white light return, brilliance, symmetry and polish. From the information you presented, it looks like your concentrating too much on clarity and weight. After you've chosen a couple of diamonds with good cuts, then weigh your options on clarity and weight. And if the cut is just right, who cares what the size is because the sparkle is what will matter the most!!!

Thank you for replying. I can't get the specific specs for the diamonds, but all are 60-61% depth and 56-57% table. I know I shouldn't but.. I'm assuming that they are all ideal cut (they are the highest quality cut the vendor sells). Assuming the cuts are equal, which diamond would u recommend? My girlfriends rings size is 6.5 and i'm going with a tiffany setting. Which reminds me, with diamonds at this size, should I go with 4 prong as opposed to 6?

If you haven't done so already ask the vendors to email or fax a copy of the certs to you.

With the AGS stone from Bluenile you can get the Pav and Crown angles as they are measured and provided by AGS. It will be less certain for the two GIA stones but look at the polish and symmetry gradings on the certs, are they both listed as EX ? If they're not, this will give you a better understanding as to the likely-hood of them being ideal cut.

My feeling is that if they're labeled as ideal cut or H&A by the vendor they should at least be able to try and proove that to you and be willing to work with you - Good luck !

Almost forgot, IMHO, 4 prong all the way

unless you like the look of the 6 prongs

Also, if you haven't done so already, you may want to go to a local jeweler and ask to see stones in that size range and with the various colors. You'll then be able to determine how important color is to you.

Please, please, PLEASE......don't assume anything. You are plunking down your hard-earned cash, and if these vendors cannot give you the information you need to make a smart purchase, then go to other vendors.

Look, would you walk into a dealership and expect to buy a car if the only information you could get was, "It's black and has four doors?" OF COURSE NOT. How much the car is worth and how much you're willing to pay for it depends on what make it is, what options it has, what the warranty is, yada, yada, yada.

It's their best cut......and that means what? The best cut I can get today at a "mall/maul" jeweler isn't even in the same league with what a truly well-cut diamond is. You need this information.

No one could give you a meaningful suggestion with the scant information you've provided above.
