Hi, this is my first post. I have been reading other posts for a while now and I have a really big dilemma.
Sorry for rambling. My problem is that last year in september my boyfriend and I bought a diamond and made an engagement ring. We sorta got sucked in because the jeweller who was a family friend kept telling us that diamond and gold prices were going up. We thought in the next year we would be getting engaged so it was a good opportunity to save some money, but now we are not getting engaged for 2 years at least because we are going to build a house and other circumstances.
The diamond we bought was an oval E SI1 1.10ct. Made as a solitare on a 18ct white gold band with diamonds. We also made up the wedding band matching with diamonds on it.

My problem is that I am feeling so stressed and sick because it is not the diamond I want anymore and my boyfriend spent all that money. I never did a lot of research on the diamond I love. I now know that I am absolutley in love with pears. I really want a pear halo like firegoddess. I absolutley love it, it is most definitely my dream ring and is the only thing I want. Im sure other readers out there know whats its like when you know what diamond shape you love and have to have. I really want to get this sorted once and for all because I cant go another day still stressing about this. I don t want to have to be left wearing the oval and always thinking about the pear.

I dont want to come across as ungrateful but I dont know what to do, I live in australia and I dont know how to sell the diamond. I dont mind doing a trade in and buying a pear diamond and pay the difference or just sell it outright. I dont know where to go or what to do. The diamond is beautiful, never worn, brand new just sitting in the box, it is 1.10ct but is on the large size for its weight. Looks more like a 1.20ct.

Any advice? What should I do? Anyone know of a place to sell it?

First of all, I am very sorry you don''t love your ering any more. I think most women, if they are newbies to the diamond market, make the same mistake you did. They just buy before researching.

But, the good news is...most reputiable jewellers will embrace trade ins. I know state-side, there is often rules about upgrading, or trading in...like, spending more money. But, if you''re really unhappy, then it might be worth looking into.

As far as telling your Fiance...I think is this by far the easiest part of your problem. Marriage is a based on honesty. Your husband presented you with your ering out of love...I''m sure he worked hard for his money and wanted you to have an accurate representation of his love. If you''re marrying if this man, you should feel comfortable enough to share with him your true feelings. Prehaps do the research on upgrading first, so when you approach him you have answers and solutions. If it is a case of "spending all his loot" then offer to pay the difference if your upgrade requires money, because after all, it''s your ring.

Hope that helps!

Welcome Kris

First of all, don''t feel bad as this can happen. I would take it a step at a time and first broach the subject with your BF as IHC says to see if he would be amenable to you changing the diamond, once you have his blessing, I think you will feel better. Also read the thread NF posted for you as that should give you some ideas on how to sell this diamond, try the jeweller you bought it from first to see if he will help. Then stick around and we will help you find that pear halo!

Hi neatfreak,
firstly thanks so much for replying. Your information is great, very helpful and a great place for me to start. I already feel better. I will try the jeweller that we got it from first then see from there.

Hi italiahaircolor, thanks so much for replying. My boyfriend knows that i want a pear and he is totally fine with it, which is a huge relief for me. My concern is that i dont know if any jewellers will do trade ins in australia. i understand that we will loose money when trading it in but i have told my bofriend that i will cover that, its my fault anyways for not researching enough. I am going to look into trading in.

hi lorelei. thanks for the support! my boyfriend knows luckily and he is totally ok with it, thank god. its just my job to fine someone is australia who will do a trade in. I dont know how lucky i''ll be finding one. Anyone know of any jewellers in aus that will? preferebly melbourne?

Kris you are most welcome!

I am not sure, but I think Garry''s company might be in Melbourne, could be wrong though, but if so he has a superb reputation and might be able to help you with that pear, and advise you how to sell the oval.

thanks for that lorelei, garry's store is actually just down the road from my house! I will email him and see what he says. Is he on pricescope? Is there any way to get in contact with him on here?
thanks

This is great news!

Maybe you can create a new post detailing your inquiry with the title "Calling Garry "The Cut Nut"" and that will get his attention if/when he is online?
That''s probably one of the only ways to get in contact with him online.

Good luck krisd!

I am glad you like my ring, though I am sorry you are having this dilemma!

I too would start at the jeweler''s where the ring was bought. See if perhaps they are willing to take it back at purchase price for credit towards the purchase of a pear. That would be your best option as they were the ones who initially sold the ring. If they are unwilling, perhaps they will take it at a slight discount or on consignment. If you try to sell the ring yourself, or trade in at another store, you will definitely lose more money on the purchase price.

Good luck though, I hope it works out for you!!

I am fairly certain I read on Garry''s site they do trade-in''s *checks*

*nods* they do here is the link that explains it Holloway Diamonds trade in policy

I just got their catalouge and they have some beautiful pieces

GL finding the ring you love it is awesome that your BF is so understanding :)

thanks firegodess. Honestly your ring is the most beautiful ring I have ever seen. It takes my breath away every time I see it. Thats how I know that I have to have it.

I have emailed garry and am awaiting a reply and I will call the jeweller we bought it from this week. Starting to feel a little better already

hi deelight, i read that on the website also, I can tell you I was so happy when I saw it!
I think I may have emailed the wrong address, I emailed him at precious metals. which the link sent me to. He has another website, holloway diamonds and now I dont know which one I am supposed to email.

I emailed Holloway diamonds for my catalouge (which I am still ohhhhing over) so I am not sure if it matters which one you email off :)

Since they are down the road maybe you might be best giving them a call ;)

Kris, I would give him a call as Dee says!
