I''m interested in purchasing an oval stone. I''m concerned about the black area on the b-scope and l-scope. Is this black area a dark bow-tie in the diamond, or is this an area of high light return? Here''s the link:

Thank you so much!

black = 'high light return', areas of direct reflection from pavilion facets.
These are explained for the rounds - and the rules of reading Iscope pics are the same for all damonds, of course.

In the B-scope animation, the black region appears as a band of brilliance accross the middle of the stone. The bow-tie is made of the dark, triangular spots on the sides of the respective band (still on the Bscope animation).

So the stone has some bow-tie - but very little of it. If this bothers you allot, ovals might be out of the picture. All have some bow tie and the vast majority of stones would have it more than this one. I think it is possible to get rid of it, but the result is a strange looking stone with 10%-15% more depth, a roundish outline and lack of scintillation. This kind of cut has been tries deliberately on sythetics and lab-made diamonds counting on the general negative perception of the 'bow-tie' effect.

In a well-cut oval, the bow should get lost in the brilliance of the stone during wear, when the stone is tilted even slightly along the long diameter. A very small bow tie such as this stone has, will do so

What you're seeing is the bow tie effect of the stone which is an optical effect caused by the short facets which come in from the side of the stone on the underside coming together with the longer pavilion mains which extend from the shoulders of the stone down to the culet... It is more pronounced in some diamonds than in others, we don't like to make judgements about other dealers stones based upon photographs which are not always the best representation of the facet structure of a stone simply because of challenges with lighting and camera angle... Talk to Jonathan in-depth about the extent of the bow tie effect, try to talk with him personally.

You should not use these tools for ovals and marquise or you will never find a stone

I would never advise anyone to avoid a bow tie because if you do, and the stone has a reasonable length to width ratio, the chances are that it will show the dirt dreadfully under the table in the pointy ends.

You need to see the stone or trust and ask the vendor. Now there are a couple of vendors who specialise in you trusting them. ......what were there names.....Drad and Bavid.....hmmm. no sorry, can not remeber them.

GOG will not sell you a pup if you ask for their advice. Besides, you might post a bad review here!

Call rhino aka Jonathon and talk to him about the diamond.
He has it there and can pull it out and look at it for you.
He will be stright up honest about it with you.
Thats the nice thing about dealing with gog and a few other dealers they have taken the time for us to get to know them and there products and they are good people.
I cant say that about a lot of others in the diamond industry.
The industry has been based on a trust me I know whats best for you attitude buy what I tell you.
That isnt good enough anymore and the dealers here are on the forefront of the change.

The bottom line is I trust Jonathon and his gog crew and feel you can also.
Call him and he will help you find the diamond of your dreams and provide a ton of verifiable information so you can make a very informed decision.

Because they posted in this thread im going to mention niceice and cut nut as other dealers that I trust and are good folks ,there are more here.
