Hi all - I am waiting on blue Nile to check a diamond for me right now. It's in NY and I'm waiting for their gemologist to make sure the"strong Fluoro" in an F color isn't affecting it negatively before committing to it. My backup choices are listed below - can anyone comment?? I like that the 1.43 has a GCAL report and it looks pretty great. However I'm tempted by diamond 1 because its largest, and by diamond 2 because it is F color and has Fluoro which I am partial to (I just think it's cool)

1.51ct $13,500
Vs1, G, Gia triple x
7.38 x 7.33 x 4.54 mm
61.7 depth
57 table
35/40 ca/pa
Gia 6202967777
No Fluoro

1.40ct $14,000
Vvs2, F, Gia triple x
7.16x 7.13x 4.40mm
61.6 depth
56 table
35/40.8 ca/pa
Gia 6147926805
Med blue Fluoro

1.43ct $13,800
Vvs2 G Gia triple x
7.19x 7.23x 4.46mm
61.9 depth
57 table
35.5/40.6 ca/pa
Gia 5203860464
No fluoro

Thank you all in advance. Trying to decide by Monday when blue Nile will know about my diamond on hold and they'll have the H color I returned by then too, so ideally I can propose on New Year's Eve if all is figured out by then...

Re: Please help decide between these 3 backup stones - by Mo

Do you think a G 1.5ct will look too warm? I'm setting it in a 1.7mm white gold rhodium plated pave band with 14 diamonds.

Re: Please help decide between these 3 backup stones - by Mo

No, the G will not be warm. In any event, people put J color stones (and lower) in white metal all the time!

I'd definitely choose the 1.5 G. It will be visually larger than the other two. I would not sacrifice size to get one color grade higher. I also like fluorescence, but not at the expense of getting a 7.1mm stone rather than 7.4mm. I also would not choose to pay for VVS clarity because VS1 is very clean even with a loupe.

Have you posted the stone they are checking for you now?

Re: Please help decide between these 3 backup stones - by Mo

This is the one they are checking.

1.50ct $12,500
VS1, F, Gia triple excellent
7.39x 7.37x 4.53mm
61.3 depth
57 table
35.0/40.8 ca/pa
GIA 2171344970
Strong blue Fluoro

It's like $1000 cheaper than the other, meaning I can get a nicer setting. It's very appealing to me, my only concern was the "strong blue"
Fluoro, only because some people get hazy stones (rare but from what I'm reading not AS rare as what GIA publication said... Apparently there are variations of hazy and I've heard just from message boards like "wedding bee" that people DO get hazy stones) ... Blue Fluoro would be awesome but only if it's not negatively affected. Do you think this stone (strong blue) is better or worse than the other 1.51ct listed here?

Thank you!

Re: Please help decide between these 3 backup stones - by Mo

I guess I'm skeptical of the one they're checking for me because the price was so good! And there was not even any additional pinpoints or surface graininess mentioned in the Gia comments section either. It looks perfect on paper

Re: Please help decide between these 3 backup stones - by Mo

Whichever stone you pick, it is going to be beautiful stone! I think the first diamond is probably the best. There is not much difference between F and G colour or VS or VVS clarity, for someone like you and me who arent GIA gemologists or diamonds experts. With these specs it is better to pay more for the carat weight. To help you decide you could use the holloway cut adviserhttps://www.pricescope.com/tools/hca

Re: Please help decide between these 3 backup stones - by Mo

Sorry, which one of the firsts ... The 1.51 G or the 1.5 F? Thanks again!! All checked out on the HCA under 2, so I agree they will likely all be beautiful... Im just splitting hairs now, but it's important to me.

The first 1.51 is actually: 40.8 PA. Sorry.

1.51ct $13,500
Vs1, G, Gia triple x
7.38 x 7.33 x 4.54 mm
61.7 depth
57 table
35/40.8 ca/pa
Gia 6202967777
No Fluoro

Re: Please help decide between these 3 backup stones - by Mo

So now it's down to these two:

Vs1, G, Gia triple x
7.38 x 7.33 x 4.54 mm
61.7 depth
57 table
35/40.8 ca/pa
Gia 6202967777
No Fluoro

2:
1.50ct $12,500
Vs1, F Gia triple x
7.39x 7.37 x 4.53 mm
61.3 depth
57 table
35/40.8 ca/pa
Gia 2171344970
strong blue fluorescence

Re: Please help decide between these 3 backup stones - by Mo

No.2 for sure it Flur checks out

Re: Please help decide between these 3 backup stones - by Mo

Thanks!! Crossing my fingers over here that the fluorescence is a good thing in that stone. It is priced so good I feel it may be too good to be true. I will find out soon enough... Ideally today but probably not until tomorrow. I'm so impatient haha

Re: Please help decide between these 3 backup stones - by Mo

Originally I meant that the 1.51 / G because it seemed like the best deal price wise (price per carat) I don't know if you have to stick to a tight budget? My diamond has a VS1 clarity and it is perfectly clean to the naked eye. I even bought a 30x loupe and still, I cant see any inclusions.
It is a very personal decision and I think it is a bit difficult buying a diamond online as two diamonds can share the same specs but be different.

The most important thing is to make the fiancee super happy. How about proposing with a dummy ring and let her pick the engagement ring? This could be romantic too and more and more people do that nowadays. Personally I wish my husband had done that! Not that my e-ring isnt beautiful but it isnt my dream ring. Depends on her character though: I am not that traditional but I am super picky :P

Re: Please help decide between these 3 backup stones - by Mo

She is picky too, but has a "Pinterest board" with all of the things I'm looking for. She likes pave bands, round stones, 1-2ct stones, and 4 prong settings... She used to like halos but those pins are all 3 years old or more - one of her friends got a halo literally yesterday and she commented on how she thought it was nice for now but she'd be annoyed with people questioning whether it's real or not because it's so much finger coverage). She also went through a rose gold phase but I don't want to go that route ... Trendy for sure and doesn't match with any of her other jewelry. I know that would bother her.

Sparkles and size are important to her- she's never said anything about color (white vs a G), and I know she'd adore the Fluoro if it ends up not negatively affecting the stone. Our relationship has been through a lot and things are finally where they need to be. Fluorescence to me would be a kind of unique special thing about our stone, much like the other things that make our situation so unique. We're taking our one year old to Disney in March and I think my girlfriend would love seeing the Fluoro in her ring there ... I read somewhere that Disney has a lot of black lights on their rides. Lol.

The price is good on this one because strong blue fl. is seen as a negative in the trade in a colorless stone. That is very much to your favor! Usually the haziness has something to do with poor clarity combined with the Fl. So in my opinion, this is a GREAT buy! It would be my personal first choice!!! That is a crazy good price and the measurement numbers look good.

Re: Please help decide between these 3 backup stones - by Mo

Great, thank you! Now I just need them to get back to me... I'm sure they think I'm crazy checking on the stone, especially since I changed my order like 20 times already... Haha

Re: Please help decide between these 3 backup stones - by Mo

Ok OR...

1.7ct, H, medium blue Fluoro, VVS1
7.64 x 7.68x 4.72mm
Gia triple excellent
61.6 depth
56 table
35/40.8 ca/pa
Gia 1218316649

This one is $14000, so I would need to opt for a plain band to save money. The other allows me to have the pave setting

This one looks good, too! Do you think a pretty setting or larger diamond is more important to her? Also, what size diamonds do her close friends or sisters have?

Re: Please help decide between these 3 backup stones - by Mo

I don't know what's more important to her. Probably the diamond? Her friends are like all married to surgeons so..:: yeah. I'm in real estate. I make good money but not THAT money

Re: Please help decide between these 3 backup stones - by Mo

I can relate to that! In that case, it's probably a good idea to go for the larger diamond. (One reason I say that is that diamond prices are kind of low right now and it is an excellent time to buy. That isn't always the case.) Then later on, she can always reset in a halo or three stone if she desires a greater size appearance. She needs to make some new friends, too! :loopy:

Re: Please help decide between these 3 backup stones - by Mo

Oh it's true about the friends! Ha!

Do you think the H color will be too warm in the 1.7? Should I go for the smaller one just bc the color is F or G versus the larger 1.7 H? Decisions are killing me with this!
