Hi

I was researching diamonds for my future e-ring on blue Nile and came across this diamond. It kind of looks too good to be true. However because I'm not that experienced in diamonds and the dos and don'ts I'd like your opinion on this.

GIA REPORT

Stock number: LD03624417
Price: $7,215
Carat weight:
1.51
Cut: Ideal
Color: J
Clarity: VS2
Depth %:
62.2%
Table %:
58%
Polish:
Excellent
Symmetry:
Excellent
Girdle:
Medium to Slightly Thick
Culet:
None
Fluorescence:
Strong
Measurements: 7.35 x 7.31 x 4.56 mm
Cut: Ideal
Fair | Good | Very Good | Ideal | Signature Ideal
This diamond is cut to the finest proportions as determined by its face-up appearance, design, and craftsmanship. It reflects nearly all light as fire and brilliance as determined by the GIA. The GIA certificate lists the cut as Excellent, which is the equivalent of an AGSL or Blue Nile Ideal cut grade.
Color: J
J | I | H | G | F | E | D
This diamond, when cut to ideal proportions, produces a warm brilliancy not found in the higher grade colors. As the least expensive diamonds in the near-colorless range, J-color diamonds present the best value in diamond color, so you can buy a larger diamond for the price. Note: If this diamond has medium or strong blue fluorescence, its slight tint will be partially masked, making the diamond appear whiter to the eye.
Clarity: VS2
SI2 | SI1 | VS2 | VS1 | VVS2 | VVS1 | IF | FL
This diamond has few, very small inclusions. The inclusions are very difficult to see under a 10x power magnification, and are almost never visible to the unaided eye. VS2 grade diamonds present an excellent value in clarity because they are typically free of visible blemishes, and they are less expensive than higher clarity grades.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Amanda

I did a search on Bluenile for 1.5 - 1.6 J VS2 rounds, with what they call 'ideal' cut ... not their best, as is their Signature Ideal cut.
They listed125 of them, priced from $7125 to $13802.
They had some for these prices too, $7,941, $7,993, etc so $7,125 wasn't a drastically low misprint like if the next more expensive one was $10,000.

Two things I see that lower the price are the Strong blue fluorescence and the cut.
It scores 2.5 on the HCA.

HCA is a rejection tool.
Reject diamonds that score over 2.0 and get Idealscope pics on those that score under 2.0.

Compare Idealscope pic to this chart.

The reason I'd not buy from Bluenile is they do not offer Idealscope pics.
I'd buy from a dealer of Crafted by Infinity, Good Old Gold, Whiteflash, James Allen or Brian Gavin Diamonds.

Hi kenny,

Thank you so much for your help. Any idea if those places you mentioned ship to Australia?

I'm sorry I do not know whether these vendors ship to Australia.
Maybe someone else here knows, or you can call them or send them an email inquiry.

Search here for "cheatsheet" There is a listing of narrow ranges of table, depth, crown and pavilion angles that give a good HCA score 2 or below. Crown and pavioion angles are inversely related to each other: Increase one and you must decrease the other or else you;ll get leakage.

Or, just look for AGS 000, because the AGS 000 range is narrower than the GIA 3x. There are some angle combinations that get GIA 3x but score low on the Holloway Cut Adviser and also are not superideal performers in real life.

Thank you for your help

I was on James Allen and found this diamond

http://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut/1.30-carat-j-color-vvs2-clarity-excellent-cut-sku-166681

however when put into the Holloway Cut Adviser the score was 2.3

What would you suggest?
In this case, the IS image shows no extra leakage, it looks most like the "excellent" example image. Because the HCA is a prediction based on averaged and rounded numbers, it is not as good as a direct assessment tool like the Ideal scope.
