Hi all,

Can I get a couple of the experts to evaluate this diamond that I'm considering. It's via a diamond broker. Open to suggestions, but on a bit of a time crunch.

Certification: GIA XXX
Carat: 1.14
Color: H (No Fluorescence)
Clarity: VS2
6.71 x 6.74 x 4.15
Table: 56%
Depth: 61.7%
Crown: 35%
Pavilion: 40.6%
Price: $7400

Thanks! D

Someone? Please :)

It has great potential, but you need more than numbers on a GIA report. You should get images and an IdealScope/ASET, if at all possible. That being said, it does fall squarely within AGS 0 ideal proportions and should perform well/be a sparkler based on HCA score. BUT we're only guessing. You also need to make sure it is an eye clean VS2. Again, going strictly off paper, you'll never know.

Understood, makes sense. And what about the price - assuming it lives up to an AGS 0?

Price is fair/good for a 1.1. I recently purchased a stone just slightly under 1.1, AGS 0, H, VS1 for $7100 for reference.

Sounds like a very good price and numbers look great. Going by the numbers it sounds like a winner, and I'd be willing to bet that it's a very, very nice diamond.
I'm assuming you can't get an idealscope image?
Does it have a return policy?

Krisjon - would you be willing to send me a PM
as to who you used?

Teobdl - unfortunately I don't have an Idealscope image (or an IdealScope)...though I will see it first-hand tomorrow. Not sure about the return policy via the broker, but I'll ask.

Thanks! D

The last stone I bought was actually via Blue Nile, but AGS 0s are a real needle in the haystack on there as 99% of their stuff is GIA. It's a sparkling fireball and just a hair off of super ideal/Hearts & Arrows. Like I said, a real needle in the haystack.

If you're seeing the stone you mentioned in person tomorrow, that's great. Your eyes will tell you a lot. Make sure to see how it does in a variety of lighting. The numbers on that thing are just what you want and it should be great, but it's always better to confirm. Good luck and let us know how it goes! If it all checks out and is eye clean, I'd jump on it. That's a good price for a 1.1.

Re: Please Evaluate this Diamond! (Update)

Krisjon & Teobdl - so I saw the 1.14 diamond as well as a new 1.2 H VS2 XXX. To be honest they were both great stones in terms of fire & brilliance. Hopefully I didn't make a minor mistake. The 1.2 scored a 2.7 from memory on the HCA when I plugged it in yet seemed to sparkle just a bit more, and looked a better under the IdealScope and the Hearts & Arrows (it was a 2-in-1 device) then the 1.14 which scored an excellent on the HCA. Is this possible or did my eyes deceive me?

So I took the 1.2 for $7700 instead of the 1.14 for $7400. Was this a bad move? Still a good deal?

Can you post the numbers for the stone you chose?
Also, did you know what you were looking at on the IdealScope? What did it look like?
HCA isn't the end-all-be-all, but I'm hoping there isn't light leakage. A 2.7 makes me think there might be something slightly off on the angles and it's a steep/deep GIA Ex that still makes the grade.

Hi all,

The GIA Report # is: 1168603613
The broker already purchased it yesterday, and unfortunately these guys don't have a return policy (there's no storefront), so hopefully it will work out.

H VS2 XXX No Fluorescence
6.76 - 6.79 x 4.23 mm
Table: 57%
Depth: 62.5%
Crown Angle: 35.5%
Crown Height: 15.5
Pavilion: 40.8%
Pavilion Depth: 43%
Star Length: 50%
Lower Half: 80%

It came out as a 2.7 on the Holloway, but in-person and under the Ideal Scope it had cleaner Hearts & Arrows than the 1.14 with a lower Holloway score. It also appeared (I say appeared) to have more fire & brilliance than the 1.14. I looked at it for a good 20 mins. in various lights.

I paid $7700. Was that too much, or is it possible that the H&A is there, but the Holloway is just a bit higher (2.7) than you'd expect?

It appears more fiery because of the steeper crown angle. As I expected, 62.5 is a little deep, too.
These are the perils of GIA Ex. The cut specs that still make the grade are very broad.
I'm sure it still looks good and your eyes are the best judge, but why would you buy something with a zero return policy?
You didn't do horribly, but I think you might have pulled the trigger too quickly.

He's a broker who had to buy it from another broker in the diamond district. I think I have to pay a $500 fee to change it I believe, because he has to pay to give it back once I said to go ahead.

Is the stone a good value as is at $7700? What are the concerns?

Again using the Scope, the Hearts & Arrows looked great.

HCA is only a predictor of light performance and cut. Based on the numbers, your stone isn't the most ideal cut, which is what we try to steer you towards, if possible. It doesn't mean it's a bad stone at all, though. It passed the visual test and you're happy with it, which is the most important thing. And for the $, a 1.2 for $7700 is a good buy. Don't feel bad about your purchase. PSers just try to help you get the most bang for your buck. You did well in that regard, but I just think we could have done a little better cut-wise.

Very fair & appreciated feedback. He tried to get the 1.14 for me but it was sent out on memo to California last night.

It honestly seemed to outperform the 1.14 under the scope, HCA aside...but they were both great and maybe my eyes deceived me a bit.

Post some pics when you get it. I'm sure it will be beautiful! You've already done better than 95% of people out there shopping diamonds.
