Ok so i'm a total newbie about diamonds and about to make a purchase for my fiance. i need some information. For now here are my questions.

1. How will inclusions affect a diamonds performance or how it will affect a diamond in general, talking about Fire, Brilliance and Sparkle.
2. How will Color affect a diamonds performance or how it will affect a diamond in general, again still talking about Fire, Brilliance and Sparkle.
3. Just how Yellow to the naked eye and or a scope is a J colored diamond that is evaluated by GIA?
4. I read about a diamonds durability, i didn't know that would be an issue with diamonds until i read about it, tell me about this please.

Here is a diamond that i'm considering on buying. .93ct, J, VS1. Polish: Excellent, Symmetry: Excellent. Flour: none, Clarity Characteristics: Crystal, Pinpoint.
Please tell me what your general opinion about this diamond is.

I posted a similar thread earlier, i don't know how it ended up in another section of the forums. Sorry.

1) it may or may not depending on a lot of things

2) color is a personal choice. Lower colors aren't "bad" and higher colors aren't "good" (well, in some places high color is expected). Color is mostly what you want. Colorless/near colorless/ faint color etc

3) some people are more tint sensitive than others. I personally wouldn't choose a GIA J for a ring but that is just me. I would consider a AGS J in a super ideal because I have found it is whiter than a "regular" J. (Trade members have recently commented on inconsistent GIA color grading FYI). I briefly had a super ideal K that I found to face up white. (Traded it back for larger but wound up with a G in the end). I would not recommend a K for a first time buyer just because it might be a little chancy...

4) please elaborate. I don't understand the innuendo.

Hi OP=)2
With a VS1 the diamond should be eye clean and I wouldn’t worry about durability.
There’s nothing wrong with a J colour and it will probably face up white enough but it will have a bit of a tint. Whether or not that’s ok for you is an individual question. If you want to be more sure you could get an eye clean H or I and go down to SI1 or VS2
It’s hard to tell anything about your diamond without more details. Do you have the report?

Report number will give us more useful info than just basic info on colour and clarity. What we are looking for is the info on angles, crown/pavilion height, table and depth.

There are a number of educational articles on this site, which can be found under the 'Knowledge' tab near the top of the forum. It may be worthwhile reading those if you haven't already.

Cut is one of the most important factors. Use the HCA tool to eliminate stones that might not perform (eliminate stones that score over 2).
(You dont need to run AGS000 stones through HCA).

Cheat sheet of angles - These number ranges should help eliminate a lot of bad performers.
depth 60 - 62.3%
table 54-58%
crown 34-35 degree (sometimes up to 35.5 with 40.6 pav...need idealscope)
pavilion 40.6 - 41 degree
complimentary angles...34 pairs with higher pavilion (41) and 35 pairs with lower pavilion 40.6
Idealscope images help to check on leakage.

Ditto Ohshinny...read through Knowledge tab for info you are looking for. Come back with any unanswered questions.

I replied on your other thread before I saw this, but I'll post the reply here, too, even though others have addressed some of the questions.

I need to know more about the stone you are looking at to determine if it is a good one. GIA Excellent is an incredibly broad category, meaning some are excellent and some are not. So we narrow those down to the really good ones. Tell me...

1. How will inclusions affect a diamonds performance or how it will affect a diamond in general, talking about Fire, Brilliance and Sparkle.

VS1 is extremely clean and there are zero concerns about inclusions in terms of light return, durability, or anything else.

2. How will Color affect a diamonds performance or how it will affect a diamond in general, again still talking about Fire, Brilliance and Sparkle.

Color has zero affect on those aspects. Cut is the key to those.

3. Just how Yellow to the naked eye and or a scope is a J colored diamond that is evaluated by GIA?

It's not going to face up yellow at all. It's just not bright white. I personally prefer I color or higher, but if the stone is set in a yellow or rose gold setting (with white metal prongs), the J would be fine. Many do set Js in all platinum or white gold, though. A well cut J will usually look better than a poorly cut one.

4. I read about a diamonds durability, i didn't know that would be an issue with diamonds until i read about it, tell me about this please.

Any diamond can be whacked just the right way and hard enough to make it crack or shatter. This is rare, but it did happen to my mother so I know it is possible. For this reason, we recommend jewelry insurance in the event covering the replacement yourself would not be desirable.
I recommend Touchstone Insurance (click consumers):

Thank you all for sharing you knowledge with me, much appreciated. I do have the GIA report numbers with me, but am i allowed to post it here?

yes - you run the risk of someone snatching the diamond up (if it's being sold online), so I'd recommend having it put on hold before you do

ahahaha good point. but the GIA report does not show the angles though, just the measurement of width and depth. where can i find the pav angle and crown angle?

How old is the GIA report?

December 2016

Can you just give us the GIA numbers?

4. Diamonds are hard. They are scratch resistant. But they are brittle. And can chip or crack if dropped and there is undue force placed upon a it (invisible stress point) or when set. Other diamonds may also scratch it.

Colour is sensitive. There are plenty of online colour charts.

D is icy white. I can usually spot that. It looks like a cubic zirconia in colour!

Everything else is splitting hairs as grading is a subjective process and diamonds can be a "high" J or a "low" J in the spectrum.
