Sorry to ask such a silly question, but though I''ve learned tons here, I can''t seem to figure out the difference between these basic terms. I thought that the "setting" or "mounting" is the part of the ring that consists of the prongs, and which holds the stone in place - but it seems there''s actually a difference between these terms, and that neither is synonomous with the "head."

Thanks a lot for helping a first-time buyer.

Hello samjeff,

Welcome to Pricescope.

The mounting or setting is the complete ring. The head is the part with prongs or bezel that is holding the diamond. The shank is the ring part that goes around the finger. There are other parts but we don''t want to get too far into complicated rings.

I hope this helps you get started. There is much to learn here.
