I am in the early stages of shopping for a treat for myself. I am torn between several items from my bucket list or ONE bigger low colour antique stone for a rhr.
I like oecs with fairly symmetrical facet patterns and think a transitional might be just the right compromise for me.
What do you think about the facet pattern of this stone?

FWIW...it you like the look then that's all that matters so take the below with a grain of salt! The stone is not for me :)) .

Personally its too close to a modern round brilliant to me. I have seen trannys with arrows but they are big and fat...I tend to like
that look more so then the look of this stone. When I look at this stone I think you might as well get a well cut round brilliant because
it looks very similar.

Here is a picture showing a fat arrow tranny (like I like)...

thank you tyty!!

Re: Please comment on the facet pattern of this transitional

yes, I am very interested in everyone's opinion!

Thanks dazzlerazzle.

Still trying to learn as much as possible. Where I live I can hardly see any antique stones and often the oecs are really chaotic cut wise. The only stone I loved IRL was a well cut but not too chunky tranny. Unfortunately it was a really high colour/clarity combo - small stone, still out of budget.

Now trying to learn what I am really looking for cut wise.

In your shoes, I'd reach out to OldWorldDiamonds and give them the specs you're looking for
- transitional with chubby arrows
- low color
- carat weight
- symmetry preferences
- budget

Re: Please comment on the facet pattern of this transitional

I'd agree that the one you're looking at looks more MRB than transitional. Have a look at these for different tranny patterns...

Re: Please comment on the facet pattern of this transitional

With OECs, I find that everyone's taste is different, and there's so many types of faceting patterns. As you're still early in your search, I suggest looking at lots of OECs - such as on Jewels by Grace, Love Affair Diamonds, Old World Diamonds, etc. - to figure out what patterning you like. All three vendors also have reviews here on PS.

Re: Please comment on the facet pattern of this transitional

Thanks foxinsox for the links. Very very helpful to have a roundup of the different patterns. Made things a lot clearer for me. So I guess I like the (fat) arrow type of a tranny, but couldn't really see why the stone I posted seemed a little off to me (now I know: arrows too skinny).
In oecs I prefer the flowery-petal pattern.
Thanks seekingshiny, you are right. I already looked through a lot of pictures from the usual vendors, but still think I need to see some more in person. As I am not in the US, this is really really hard. I can't really return anything, since my 28% taxes won't be refunded in case I return the stone....

Here, oecs are either horrible quality (like, P clarities... not even talking cut, no certs ) OR nice (still have to luck out in a high end antique store) and 2-3 x the US price, still no certs..

Re: Please comment on the facet pattern of this transitional

While you are out looking at OECs, try to figure out what your color tolerance is. That probably wont be easy if you cant
find nicely cut OECs in your area.

The folks here on PS can help you find/pick out a nice OEC when you are ready.

Re: Please comment on the facet pattern of this transitional

Hi Kipari
Where in Europe are you based? I managed to find a beautiful OEC in the UK at a very good price and just wanted to say it is possible!
Good luck
Chris

Re: Please comment on the facet pattern of this transitional

hi Chris, good to know it CAN be done! I'm in France. Most people I know with a nice budget are buying coloured stone e-rings,often antique. Many of my friends have really really really gorgeous antique sapphire or ruby rings with a big oec halo (one is a family heirloom with a HUGE square ruby and at least 0.5 ct/each oecs around it). Or all diamond flower /cluster oec rings.
But diamond solitaires are rare and generally much smaller.

Re: Please comment on the facet pattern of this transitional

thanks for the suggestion evergreen, nice stone at a great price. I was hoping for a bit bigger size, since I have a bit more budget. Otherwise LAD have a gorgeous k VS1 with a pattern I LOVE. unfortunately a tad small as well. That one would be my HG in a size around 1.8 ct

I went on the hunt today, to look at some rings/stones and was as usual very disappointed: everything uncerted, vendors trying to talk me into horrible stones /rings (e.g. anicely mounted antique three stone, with sidestones in the I/J range, I guess, but center stone min. p colour, grayish modifier, totally wonky cut ... and the shop owner tells me she cannot see any difference...) .
And then I went into a super small shop that looked like a pawn shop and was about the size of a phone booth. Total turnoff location wise. BUT really knowledgeable owner, who had a list of estimated color/clarities for his stones that seemed pretty spot on to me, nice and helpful. And BAM, I totally lost my heart ....
unfortunately twice my budget. I will wait until I saved up some more and if the ring is still there, it's Kismet....
est . J/k VS (totally loupe clean to me, but I am not an expert). 2,75 ctw
size 6 finger 22 k

Re: Please comment on the facet pattern of this transitional

unfortunately I am a really bad photographer and just snapped a pic in the tiny tiny shop...Adore the dainty setting as well. They offered me to take the stone out of the setting to get the price down... which I found odd, since it seems unlikely to find another oec for a bezel and the delicacy of the setting seems to me the whole operation pretty risky, I would think..

Re: Please comment on the facet pattern of this transitional

Is the stone certed?

Re: Please comment on the facet pattern of this transitional

nope. They don't want to take the risk of taking it out of the bezel.

Part of why I found their approach to negotiating the price weird. Why agree to sell the stone without the setting cheaper? That setting would most likely not survive. And setting a different diamond into the bezel? Even more unlikely. And the super uber delicate filigree part makes resizing the bezel completely impossible. The halo is also so so delicate... I have a 1mm total channel set plat/single cut band and this was so much smaller... incredible..
If I get serious about purchasing it (won't happen right now, need some time to amp up my budget) after some more comparison shopping, I'd have him sign his colour/clarity estimate and a return option if the stone was lower per cert/ appraisal. He agreed to this while we were chatting, but obviously I would want that written down. Wouldn't take the stone out of the bezel either, though. So I'd have to go for an AGS mounted diamond cert (have to look into cost of shipping etc.) or use a reputable independent appraiser.

Re: Please comment on the facet pattern of this transitional

Thanks jaaron!!
she has some really beautiful pieces... her pictures are very difficult to decipher, though. But that Frank Muller watch... wow...

Re: Please comment on the facet pattern of this transitional

The stone you have in the pic above doesn't so it for me either it's' going to have a cut pattern more similar to a badly cut round brilliant than a fat arrowed transitional or any type of OEC. You should be able to find decent antique jewellers in large French cities.

Re: Please comment on the facet pattern of this transitional

hi arkieb1,thanks, just to clarify, were you talking about the loose stone or the one in the ring?

Unfortunately it's really hard to find any nice antique diamonds here. I was in the poshest quarters in Paris and that's where all the antique diamonds are uncerted and mostly low quality. A few dealers explained to me that for them the focus is more in the overall design/uniqueness and workmanship of a piece and not the quality of the diamonds. The vast majority of clients seem not to care... But I obviously don't want a 2.75 ct dud...antique or not... couldn't find anyone similar to Grace or Erica e.g., specialised in antique stones.

Link with some suggestions;

http://www.travelandleisure.com/articles/when-it-glitters

I haven't been to the Antique markets for many years but they used to have some interesting looking Antique diamond rings there as well. And if that fails if you have the time go on a weekend trip to London and go to Hatton Garden, it's expensive but you will see some decent cut stones in places like Berganza and others, quite a few of them, particularly the smaller stores will haggle. Otherwise I recommend paying the tax (I have to pay tax which I hate too) and buying something from Erica at LAD, Grace from JBG, Adam at OWD or if you are really fussy or out of your depth a new perfectly cut stone from Victor Canera or Good Old Gold.

The pic of the first stone was the one I was commenting on, I can't see the stone in the ring you have in your other photos clearly.

Re: Please comment on the facet pattern of this transitional

Thanks a lot arkieb1, very interesting and fun read!!
Would LOVE to meet Mr. Cartier...

Kind of confirms my experience though... nice to window shop, but since I'm not a pro, it's highly unlikely I'll ever feel confident enough to plunk down 10 or 15 k on a dirty (see article) and uncerted stone. *le sigh*. education is also limited.:if the colour is not certed, I won't see any clearer re. my personal sweet spot. which seems to be around j/k or much lower for top light brown stones in the right hue.

The inbound tax is not the problem when buying from the US... it is the fact that I can't return anything without losing the tax. I called customs and it's super complicated to begin with and even if successful, they'll always keep a portion (around half) of the amount. This plus shipping is also huge risk to take.
For mrbs it's a no brainer, though...

Thanks everyone for your comments... situation was getting a bit frustrating for me. I have the funds set aside and the shipping itself is so complicated logistically that I don't think shopping is especially fun at this point. Which in my opinion is a bit counterproductive ...
Contacted jbg and LAD.
